and elements of the 9th and 10th SS Panzer divisions as well as a few other divisions that were part of 7th Army that barely escaped the Falaise
Gap were right on the flanks of the main road all over. If the British armored was delayed for even a day, it might spell disaster for the whole operation.
She was now glad at least she and Steve were here to perhaps keep that from happening, but more than likely, it would mean that they wouldn't be going back to Susan for a few days.
Peggy sighed heavily before heading back to Steve and to refuel the fire wall if it hasn't gone down into embers. She would need to know the progress back in Arnhem before she could even go look for the 101st.
Peggy soon arrived to see Steve helping the Red Devils fighting street by street through Arnhem while the
Waffen-SS troops were trying to hold the line without armor support that was on the outsides of the towns and city, though obviously they wouldn't make much of a difference once Steve would turn his attention.
"Peggy!", Steve called out as he and several men of the 1st Airborne ran up with him right by the main road bridge.
"This is Brigadier General John Hackett with the 4th Para Brigade. His unit got organized the fastest and charged with me back to the city.".
"Bloody good time too, Captain. Damn intel really screwed us over this time. A few Dutch resistance men met with us and told us they practically were screaming back to command that almost a whole
SS corps was around here for a week!", Hackett cursed as he wiped his forehead with his red beret.
"So, I've seen.", Peggy sighed, "The 82nd got Nijmegen but only after I cleared much of the resistance.", with a nod. "What a mess...", Steve shook his head.
Peggy replied, "Steve, I think we are to be busy for a few days.", and Steve widened his eyes before whispering, "You think the doc and Phillips will be okay with her that long?".
Peggy smiled reassuringly as she whispered right back, "We have to trust them, Steve.", before clearing her throat, and glanced at Hackett, "Any news on the 101st?".
"Bad radios, unfortunately. It's like command is tying both our hands behind our backs!", Hackett said.
"Mostly, you're our best chance of getting in touch with the other two Airborne divisions as well as the armor coming down the road. I hope they've already broken through at Valkenswaard.", Steve said.
"I'll make sure that those bridges are all good for the armor and that they're on their way fast as possible.
Steve, you have to make sure that this city and area is clear; buy the division some breathing room at least.
If I know Jerry, they'll be hitting fast as possible with the counterattack like they love to do.",
Susan put her hand on Steve's shoulder. "And I'll make sure that we get this done as soon as we can, so Susan doesn't miss us.".
Steve smiled softly, "I know, but I also know that we can't afford to miss even a critical change of attack or such.
Be careful, Peggy.", squeezing her hand on his shoulder as he leaned in to kiss her knuckles.
Peggy nodded, "I will.", with a smile, before nodding to Hackett, "Try to talk by short bound on radio, sir. After all, we have morse code.".
Hackett nodded, "Brilliant idea, Captain. May God give you strength...well, you know what I mean...", and Peggy smiled gratefully before shooting up and flaming on, flying for the south again.
Peggy quickly moved on the other bridges south along the main road which Peggy quickly gave the name of 'Hell's Highway' with just how much of a disaster was waiting in the wings if the Allies started to get into real trouble.
She quickly linked up with other elements of the 82nd at Grave before meeting the 101st at places like Veghel and Son; quickly helping save the bridge at the latter just minutes before the Germans could wire it to blow.
Finally, there was the troops at Eindhoven before all the bridges were at least held by at least a company's worth of troops.
By midafternoon, Peggy finally helped the British Guards Division break through at Valkenswaard and elements of the armor made it fast to
Eindhoven while the rest of the XXX Corps moved their way up the road. When the sun began to set; the XXX was somewhat behind schedule but at least made it to
Veghel and was on pace to either reach Nijmegen or even Arnhem by the next evening.
Come the next morning, the armor was on the move again as Peggy once more was to help with the drive as she had properly guessed, the
Germans quickly reorganized and were trying to strike at the flanks of the advance. Something that should've been expected from troops under the command of Field Marshal Walter
Model 'The Fuhrer's Fireman'. By the night of the 18th, XXX Corps was now having elements crossing the bridge at Nijmegen and were only a few kilometers from Arnhem. Market Garden might just work thanks to her and Steve.
"Just walking distance for us... and the armor decides to park for the night.", Steve chuckled as he and
Peggy were sitting on the bank of the Rhine right next to the 'Carter-Rogers Bridge' the troops had named the main road bridge at Arnhem they helped take.
Peggy smiled, "Can you blame them? Without electric lights or such, it's hard to keep traveling through the night when it's the armor.",
before sighing heavily, "It's strangely weird when I have been used to coming for the nights to eat dinner, have playtime with Susan, to cuddle and such with you, Steve..".
Feels more like before in Italy, in some ways; some of those nights where we were having to stick closer to the troops, not have much in terms of privacy with each other.",
Steve said as he leaned against her. "At least we might be at the end of this battle almost... once the armor rolls into Arnhem,
