Chen Wei couldn't help but chuckle at the man's words. Such an honest guy, he thought. But that's a good thing.
The woman beside the man gave him a frustrated glare but didn't say anything further and walked towards the sales office. The man quickly stood up and followed her.
As they passed by Chen Wei, he gave the man a slight smile. The man, momentarily puzzled, returned the smile before continuing inside.
Chen Wei thought for a moment and then followed them in.
Seeing Chen Wei re-enter, Xiao Ru hurried over and asked, "Chen Ge, is there anything else you need?"
"Oh, nothing much. I just ran into a friend and wanted to say hi," Chen Wei replied casually.
Xiao Ru didn't ask further and politely walked away.
The woman was discussing the details of buying the house with a sales agent, while the man stood nearby, occasionally adding a comment. Before long, the woman went with the sales agent to pay the deposit, and the man stayed by the model display, studying it.
Chen Wei approached the man and straightforwardly asked, "Brother, I overheard earlier that you're a driving instructor?"
The man, seeing Chen Wei again, smiled and nodded, confirming it.
"Which driving school?" Chen Wei inquired further.
"Shunda, just across the street. We're thinking of buying a place here to make commuting easier," the man replied, clearly very friendly and open.
Chen Wei made some small talk before getting to the point, "Brother, I want to get a driver's license. How much does it cost?"
"Three thousand nine hundred and eighty. If you come to me, I can get you a discount," the man said enthusiastically, handing Chen Wei a business card.
Chen Wei took the card and saw that the man's name was Zhang Chuankai. "Alright, Zhang Ge, my name is Chen Wei. I'll give you a call soon."
"Sounds good," Zhang Chuankai replied cheerfully.
Chen Wei didn't linger, saying his goodbyes and leaving.
Xiao Ru, who had been observing from a distance, realized that Chen Wei didn't have a driver's license, which explained why he didn't own a car. A thought occurred to her, and she walked over to Zhang Chuankai, "Brother, you're a driving instructor?"
"Yes," Zhang Chuankai answered, puzzled by the sudden interest.
"I want to sign up for driving lessons with you," Xiao Ru said.
"Sure," Zhang Chuankai agreed readily and handed her a business card.
Xiao Ru also gave Zhang Chuankai her business card. "By the way, Zhang Ge, I want to take lessons with Chen Ge. Can you arrange that?"
Zhang Chuankai looked at Xiao Ru with a curious expression, then smiled, "No problem. When Chen Wei starts his lessons, I'll let you know."
"Thank you, Zhang Ge," Xiao Ru said happily.
Chen Wei left the sales office and took a taxi straight to the train station. Xu Lili had just sent him a message: "Send me off one last time. I'm at the train station."
Chen Wei had no reason to refuse, so he went.
The train station was in the southern part of the city, near the sea. Xu Lili was waiting for him by the seaside.
The late autumn air by the sea was a bit chilly. From a distance, Chen Wei saw her figure bathed in the sunset, looking both proud and lonely.
"When's your train?" Chen Wei asked softly as he stood beside Xu Lili, looking out at the sea.
"Eight o'clock tonight. I'm going to Beijing first, staying overnight, and then heading to America early tomorrow morning," Xu Lili replied with a hint of melancholy and anticipation for the future.
"Take good care of yourself over there," Chen Wei said.
"You too," Xu Lili responded.
A long silence followed.
After a while, Xu Lili spoke again, "Actually, Tan Rui is a pretty good guy. His family is better than mine, his job is better, he looks better, and his personality is better. You might want to consider him."
"We'll see," Chen Wei replied.
"Come on, you can't be that heartbroken, right? It's not like we had a bad breakup. Don't make me look down on you!" Xu Lili said with a laugh.
"Not at all. I just don't think Tan Rui is the right person for me," Chen Wei said with a smile.
"Really? Now you're being picky, huh? Even Tan Rui isn't good enough for you?" Xu Lili teased.
Chen Wei just smiled and didn't say anything.
Another silence ensued.
This time, Chen Wei broke it, "Lili, I've made quite a bit of money trading U.S. stocks recently."
"Really? How much?" Xu Lili asked, surprised.
"Close to two million. About 1.8 million last month," Chen Wei said calmly, stating a fact without any hint of boasting.
He wasn't trying to win Xu Lili back. Both of them were the type of people who, once they made a decision, would never look back. He just didn't want to hide anything from her anymore.
"Seriously? That much? Why didn't you tell me earlier? If you'd told me sooner, I might not have broken up with you," Xu Lili said in surprise.
"It's not too late now. You could still stay and come back with me," Chen Wei said with a smile.
Xu Lili rolled her eyes but said nothing.
Another long silence.
Finally, Xu Lili said, "I've been thinking all week about whether my decision was right or wrong."
"Right or wrong doesn't matter. What matters is that once you make a decision, you have to stick to it," Chen Wei said softly.
"You're right. So, I've decided to go to America," Xu Lili nodded.
"Then go," Chen Wei said.
"Since you made so much money last month, aren't you going to treat me to a farewell meal?" Xu Lili said with a playful smile.
"Sure, what do you want to eat? Order anything you like," Chen Wei replied readily.
In their three years together, he had never properly treated Xu Lili to a nice meal. This last meal could make up for that.
Xu Lili thought for a moment, "How about grilled squid?"
She pointed to a nearby street vendor.
"Grilled squid?" Chen Wei was taken aback.
"Yes! I've been in Yunzhou for so many years and have never had it. Every time I smell it, it makes my mouth water. I couldn't afford it before, and later I just never got the chance. Now that I'm leaving, if I don't try it, I might never get the chance again. I must have it once!" Xu Lili said, running towards the stall.
Chen Wei smiled helplessly and followed her.
