章節 26: Gresvin's first sparring battle

After a few hours of planning and coming up with ideas he would be able to implement, Gresvin finally left his cabin, and by this time, the sun was already at its limit for the day, and the warmth had started to wane. The cold wind slowly picked up as the darkness took over.

Gresvin did not mind in the slightest, as he was still reeling from energy. He went to search for Marcus, and he did not need to look too far; it seemed that Marcus had made arrangements for his duty and would be stationed in the central watchtower; well, at least, that was how Gresvin saw it.

Every time Gresvin went searching for Marcus, he found him either in his cabin, the training area, or the central watchtower, nowhere else.

His heavy steps alerted Marcus, but before he could salute, Grevsin said, "There's no need to do this every time," with a small smile plastered on his face. Marcus could lift his brow, confused, 'My Lord,' he thought silently.

Gresvin saw Marcus's perplexed look, and he could not help but chuckle. "Do not give me such a look. It gets tiring to keep these formalities all day," he replied. Marcus nodded his head once uncertainly before he raised his body.

"This place is not extremely beautiful, with the dark woods behind, the small lanterns and torches of the village, and the plowed fields outside. Based on this, it certainly shouldn't be, but I can't help but give it a second look each time I'm up here. I wonder why," he spoke softly while watching the soft glow of torches in the distance.

"Do you feel so too, Marcus?" Gresvin turned his head and asked with a bright smile. Marcus, who had stayed silent the whole time, found the situation utterly confusing, but since his lord had spoken, he had no choice but to reply.

"Mm," his eyes wandered to the village as well before he cautiously spoke. They certainly have a way of making one feel welcomed and at home." His reply was short. After a long silence, Marcus still did not hear Gresvin speak, and he quickly turned around to see Gresvin smile with a relaxed expression.

Gresvin was shocked at Marcus' answer, but as he thought back to it, he could not help but agree, and his expression softened quite a bit, 'Home, huh?' he thought.

Over the last couple of months, he had traveled and traversed dangerous terrain, fought enemies in the open and in the dark, and been all alone without a place to call his own or anyone there for him. But as he thought back on the last few months, a soft smile appeared. He finally had a place he could call 'home' once more.

He traveled to find a place that would accept him, and in the last few weeks, he found that place, right here, at a small village on the outskirts of the woods called Coedwig. Gresvin relaxed once this thought appeared, 'Yes, that's right. This is home.'

Marcus had arguably stayed the most at Gresvin's side compared to the rest of the recruits. It has been almost three weeks since he came under Gresvin. Although he did not know too much about his lord, this was the first time he saw a smile that was peaceful and relaxed on Gresvin's face.

Marcus could not help but stare wide-eyed at Gresvin when he heard a soft mutter escape his lips: "Indeed, they do indeed." The words were simple and short, but even with Gresvin's humble and kind personality, they meant much more than what they appeared to be.

Marcus, knowing this, gave a light smile before turning his gaze to the village once more, not wanting to destroy the peaceful quiet that had nestled its way into the tower. There, when the last vestiges of light had long disappeared, two men stood like silent sentinels watching over the village down below.

Morning arrived, and the two men had long since been off duty. Gresvin had returned to his cabin to catch some much-needed sleep. It was only late morning that Gresvin woke up from his sleep and went out.

Gresvin stepped out of the cabin, his gaze turning upwards to the sky. He blinked and squinted his eyes. The sun made it difficult for him to stare, but he did not turn his gaze away. He kept staring and only stopped once his eyes had thoroughly adjusted.

Only then did he gaze around the area; the open area between the cabins was empty, and no one was present, 'They seem empty as well.' he gazed at the cabins; Gresvin could see no signs of movements even though only roughly looked at them, 'Mm, I wonder where Marcus is'

Gresvin had wanted to talk with Marcus about him giving a helping hand to the training, but he forgot; the night had been so peaceful and pleasant that the thought had completely slipped his mind.

Gresvin wanted to spar and train with the warriors for two reasons, both of which were almost exactly the same—he wanted to improve his proficiency with the sword, and, in doing so, he hoped he could help the warriors increase their skill as well.

If he was able to increase his level of skill, then the village could have another rank 2 warrior, excluding himself. Then, dealing with the bandits would be easier in the future.

Gresvin walked down the dust-trodden path towards the village. The villagers were running around doing the same old routine, busy with chores and running here and there for supplies. But all of them stopped and greeted Gresvin as 'Lord Gresvin' or 'My Lord,' and either way, they greeted him with the utmost respect.

Gresvin had somewhat adjusted to their new way of greeting, and in all honesty, he did not mind in the slightest. Even though he was only responsible for the safeguarding of the village and had absolutely nothing to do with the internal workings of the village, they still referred to him by such titles.
