Chapter 53: Two Gatherings

From the high price, it seems this person might not be in a hurry to sell the item... No, not necessarily. He might just be bluffing to prevent others from deliberately lowering the price... But it also indirectly indicates that he still has some time before the three-month deadline, otherwise, he might even give it away for free.

Alice shook her head and leaned back in her chair, but a strange thought suddenly popped into her mind: If I buy this item and then share it with Klein for three months each, would that be exploiting a loophole?

But at this moment, the next person had already started speaking, so Alice abandoned this dangerous idea.

Next, several people proposed trades, some of which were successful while others failed. Alice learned that the old gentleman's codename was "Eye of Wisdom."

Finally, the old gentleman "Eye of Wisdom" clapped his hands twice and said, "That's it for today. As usual, leave one by one, with a three-minute interval between each."

Is this to prevent tracking? Alice suddenly understood. She watched as "Eye of Wisdom" arranged for others to leave one by one until only the two of them were left.

"How did you find out about this extraordinary gathering?" the old gentleman asked without showing any emotion.

"...Kaspar," Alice honestly revealed her true source of information.

"Eye of Wisdom" looked at Alice, seemingly waiting for her to continue.

"I just arrived in Backlund and needed to buy some extraordinary materials. The black market weapons dealer might have relevant clues..." Alice explained her unreliable reasoning process.

"Eye of Wisdom" scrutinized Alice for a few seconds before slowly saying, "But you didn't buy anything."

"One reason is that there was nothing I needed, and another is that I'm not sure if I'll have the chance to come again." Alice met the gaze of "Eye of Wisdom."

After looking at Alice for a while, "Eye of Wisdom" took out a piece of paper marked with a sun symbol and placed it in front of Alice, saying, "You need to prove your sincerity. This is a byproduct of an extraordinary item from the 'Sun' pathway, equivalent to a one-time contract."

Alice tilted her head, then took out the 1-penny coin she had left and silently repeated "He is telling the truth" seven times before tossing the coin.

When she saw the coin land with the king's face up, Alice retrieved the coin and signed the contract as required by "Eye of Wisdom" to prove her sincerity. After witnessing Alice sign the contract, "Eye of Wisdom" told her the code for the gathering as promised, and Alice once again witnessed the method of contacting through the newspaper.

Afterward, Alice left the room under the guidance of "Eye of Wisdom," removed her hood and returned it to the attendant, then retraced her steps back to the "Brave Bar," removed the iron mask, walked through the kitchen, and found Kaspar waiting at the door of the card room in the now lively bar.

As she passed by the old man, Alice seemed to remember something, changed her face back to her original appearance, winked at him, and left with a light step.

...

Alice met Klein again when he contacted her through the gray fog, telling her that he seemed to be targeted by an Intis ambassador.

"...But what good does it do to tell me?" Alice looked at Klein in confusion. "You know, my combat ability is not much higher than yours, and according to your description, the opponent is at least a mid-sequence."

"If I wanted to find a suitable bodyguard..." Klein looked at Alice tentatively.

"You can try your luck at the Brave Bar," Alice thought for a moment and said to him. "That Kaspar seems to know quite a few extraordinary people... Also, if the other party is determined to kill you, the best way is to kill him first."

— Alice above the gray fog did not realize that she had once again made a suggestion that was out of character for her.

Of course, compared to the time with the fat pharmacist, this suggestion was much more reasonable, as the opponent genuinely wanted to kill Klein.

...

At 3 p.m. on Monday, the familiar crimson pulled Alice into the gray fog.

Next, came the familiar greeting from Audrey: "Good afternoon, Mr. Fool, Mr. Hanged Man, Mr. Sun, Miss Destiny."

Sitting at the head of the bronze long table, Klein chuckled and responded, "Welcome, our Miss Reader."

Audrey smiled reservedly, and then Alger submitted this week's diary.

Then, Alger said to Klein, "Mr. Fool, I have obtained some information about the Secret Order."

"Very good." Klein nodded slightly, seemingly not avoiding the presence of others.

Alger spoke at a steady pace, "The Secret Order has some connections with the Intis Republic."

Alice subconsciously glanced at Klein, who might be assassinated by the Intis ambassador at any time.

Sure enough, Klein lightly tapped the edge of the long table and said, "I am going to issue a mission."

Apart from Alice, who already knew the content and truth of the mission, Alger and Audrey couldn't hide their nervousness. Of course, Audrey also had some anticipation.

"You can choose to accept or not," Klein said in a relaxed tone. "Another of my followers has arrived in Backlund. He wants to accomplish some things but is inconvenient to show up himself."

If you don't accept, you might not see Mr. Fool again...

No one spoke, so Klein continued to issue his mission: "What he wants to accomplish is to assassinate the Intis Republic's ambassador to the Kingdom of Ruen, Beckland Jean Mardin."

"Assassinate the Intis Republic's ambassador?" Audrey couldn't control herself and asked in astonishment.

Klein looked around and maintained his relaxed attitude, "Who among you is willing to accept this mission? What reward do you want?"

Alice turned to look at the astonished Audrey. Seeing her hesitant expression, Alice suddenly remembered her suggestion to Klein to kill the Intis ambassador.

...That was not a suggestion I should have made!

This time, Alice finally realized the origin of her mindset—it wasn't even malice; it was a kind of high-handed indifference and disdain for life.

I am disdainful... But why am I disdainful? What right do I have to be disdainful? The other party can crush me with a finger!

Alice searched her memory in confusion, but she couldn't find the source of that disdain in her memories.

Of course, this was destined to be futile. Not to mention that her memories before becoming Alice were almost blank, she couldn't even be sure if this thought originated from herself.
