"Are you sure about this?" Isanna asked Ron as they followed Emily out of the castle through the window. Vanessa was with them too, Isanna was worried about two things, Emily leading them into a trap and Vanessa. Since Vanessa was a lioness Isanna had to keep an eye on her in case she attacked Ron.
"It's fine we don't have any other choice," said Ron and it was true. Soldiers were running around the city. They were searching land, air, and water for the missing humans, they knew how clever the humans could be. They stayed low as Emily took them through the roofs of the houses and buildings, hiding from the winged guards in the sky would have been impossible like this, but Emily seemed to have done this before, she knew perfect houses and buildings with enough shade to get them across unnoticed.
Vanessa was having a moment of doubt now, mainly because of what news Barnes and Yanos might have brought from the castle. From what she had heard of Isanna whispering to Ron, the capital had asked to capture the humans who they were having troubles with at the border. Now Vanessa was herself in the same position as Emily and understood how she felt, but more than anything else she wanted to go to the capital, the message hadn't mentioned her at all, it was like they had forgotten about her in all this. She wanted to leave the city and go to the capital and see for herself what was going on. She was contemplating using the same way that Emily was showing them now to leave.
"It's right up here, keep your heads low," Emily said from the front. They were near the outer edges of the city now, Emily jumped down into a dark alley from the top of the house. There was a small circular door in the ground made of the same colored stone, you would miss it completely if you weren't looking for it. Emily opened it up and jumped in, and Vanessa followed. After a second's hesitation, Ron and Isanna jumped after. It was a very tight tunnel, with no stone or cement in the walls, it could fall over them and crush them in a second. Ron walked fast, he wanted to get on the other end as soon as possible.
"Take long breaths, the air is very thin here," Isanna grabbed his hand and supported him.
After another ten minutes of walking through the tunnel, they saw light on the other end, there was a similar door but this one in front of them, when Emily opened it, they found themselves above land, the tunnel was in a small hill in the forest out of the city. They all got out one by one.
"We are really out," Ron said looking around.
"Yes, but they will soon start searching in these forests, so you should get out of here, I have no idea how you are going to cross the whole kingdom without getting caught, we half-breeds are really good at hunting prey you know," said Emily.
"Thanks for this, really, I hope whatever this is gets sorted soon and we can meet openly again soon," said Ron hugging Emily.
"Weiss would be really sad you left without meeting her," said Emily.
"I left her a letter in her room," said Ron.
"We should leave," said Isanna.
"All right bye, Emily, Vanessa, it was nice meeting you," said Ron.
Ron and Isanna bowed and they soon vanished in the dense forest. Vanessa kept looking in the direction they had gone.
"What are you thinking about, we should leave too?" Emily asked.
"You know what you said about being free from all of this," said Vanessa.
"Yeah, what about it?" Emily asked.
"Are you still thinking about running away?" Vanessa asked.
"I have changed my mind, for now, I want to first deal with all of this and once everything is back like before, then I'll go on a long trip to faraway places, and have a little adventure," said Emily.
"Yeah, let's first deal with this, then I'll come with you too," said Vanessa and they got back in the tunnel.
"How are we going to get out of here?" Ron asked Isanna as they ran through the forest.
"If we can meet up with Derek and Fiona, then we'll have more chances, he knows the layout of the kingdom much better than me, otherwise on our own we'll have to be careful," said Isanna.
Derek had taken Fiona to a considerable distance from the city just to be sure of any ambush, when he was sure it was enough they stopped and were now waiting for Isanna and Ron.
"Why did we come all the way here? How will they find us now?" asked Fiona.
"Isanna can find us, that's not what I am worried about, it's anything else finding us first," said Derek.
"What?" asked Fiona.
"From the information I got from the Barbarian prisoner, there is an old enemy of mine who might be behind all of this, now that I think about he is the only one who could have sent those mercenaries after me, and now the royal guards who are even more dangerous," said Derek.
"I am not leaving until we find them," said Fiona.
Ron was having a hard time keeping up with Isanna who was running fast.
"Use your mana on the feet," Isanna told him.
"That's what I have been doing," Ron said panting.
Isanna suddenly stopped in her tracks and pushed out her arm to stop Ron beside her and moved in behind a tree.
"What is it?" Ron asked.
"Someone strong just entered the forest, we aren't alone anymore," said Isanna. Her instincts told her that another player or players of similar power had entered the playground, from what she could tell Derek was still pretty far. It was much more likely they making contact with the others before Derek. This was going to turn into a game of hide and seek. Isanna led Ron through the forest in a zig-zag pattern, always staying away from the third person's reach, she knew they were the ones being hunted and their best strategy right now was to not let them get a precise lock on their location. Ron was getting more and more scared by the second, without Derek he was really afraid to fight a strong opponent right now.
"Have you caught a scent of them yet?" Freya a lynx-type asked Thane a wolverine-type.
"Even before we entered the forest, but she is good, she has crisscrossed her tracks so that I can't know where she is heading," said Thane.
"She? A female, good, it's fun hunting them," said Cormac a chimera-type.
"Yes, she is the only one with any considerable scent of power, there might be another one or two weaker humans with her," said Thane.
"Our information said there were supposed to be four," said Lysandara a snake-type.
"Let's catch this female first, then we can ask her," said Cormac.
"If she has split her scent, then there is only one thing left to do, let's split," said Freya.
"I was hoping you would say that, I hope I am the lucky one," said Cormac already taking off into the forest.
Stevin had just managed to get rid of Jared who had wanted to drag him back to the party with him but Stevin made the excuse that the alcohol wasn't sitting well with him which was kind of true.
Stevin came back and was headed to his room when he heard some moans coming from Cara's room. Taken back he looked inside the slightly ajar door and found Vivian and Flint having sex on Cara's bed. Stevin was relieved and closing the gate went to his room. Wondering where Cara and Morris had gone he opened his room door, only to find, Cara sleeping on his bed and Morris reading one of his books.
"Oh, hey, sorry I borrowed one of your books, " said Morris getting up.
"It's fine," said Stevin.
"I should leave, I'll just check up on Flint, " said Morris heading for the door.
"No, it's fine I just checked up on them, and they are fine, tell me, do you know, Abrath, " Stevin quickly tried to get Morris busy in a conversation.
"Yeah, I know him, he is from my clan after all, " said Morris.
"Yeah, he is a good friend of mine, we were on the same team this year, So you were in the finalists with Cara too right? " said Stevin.
"Yeah, " said Morris.
"What favor are you planning to ask of the elders, I know Cara was planning on asking some private lessons from Elder Holt, " said Stevin.
"Yeah, she told me about it, but now she's changed her mind, she is going to ask to go outside the mountain to the five-head meeting, we both are, " said Morris.
"What? Why? Our parents are probably going there anyway, " said Stevin.
"So?" asked Morris.
"Well the only reason I can think of she would want to leave the mountain is to get away from them for some time, but that's not going to work for this, " said Stevin.
"Yeah, no we just wanted to see the other races you know, it would be fun, everyone doesn't miss a chance to go to the human village, " said Morris making up a believable lie he hoped. But Stevin knew Cara too well to know she must have a bigger reason.
