章節 103: Chapter 102

Derek didn't receive any reply to the letters that he sent to the old man over the next few days which pissed him off more and more. He tried to get some information out of the half-breeds but they were equally restless about not knowing any answers.

Derek was sure his letters were being intercepted by someone not want him to make contact with the human kingdom. After much thinking, he decided it was time to think of other means. They needed to set some other backup plans in place. For that Derek had only three people to work with, I wanna, Fiona, and Ron. Isanna would be his first choice but he was having trouble making her take him seriously after that night, he knew all along there is always a price for something good, but now their dynamics were a bit different.

Which left Fiona and Ron, Fiona had already proved she was capable of stealth work but she was already doing the intelligence gathering. She couldn't use her affinity for too long and this task required a longer amount of time, and it wouldn't be a good idea to send her in her actual form because she would attract too much attention in this city of half-breed on account of being a good looking human girl which left only Ron.

So, Ron found himself sneaking through the half-breed city in the middle of the night. He had no experience doing such things, so he was very slow and careful. He was full of nerves and kept jumping at every small sound.

He had a map of the city he had managed to get from Emily on the pretense of being lost in the city always which was somewhat true. Derek had called him earlier and ordered him to find a way out of the city other than the gates. He didn't tell him why he wanted him to do that. Ron tried to think of valid reasons but all possibilities weren't good for them, he also for some reason was feeling really guilty. They were the ones who had come here without permission, the half-breeds had treated them fine. Maybe the Duke and ministers might have been a little cold, but that was expected because of their position and what they had been through. So he didn't like sneaking in the city like this and the thought of getting caught scared him not just because of any punishment but also because of Emily, who thought of him as her friend.

He was sure that if he asked her for something like this she might not say no, but Derek had forbidden him to do that and also keep up the good relations with the half-breeds, it was the kind of diplomatic work Derek usually did, Ron didn't like it, he wondered If Ash was doing something like this too, alone in the Elven kingdom.

Ron was heading towards the North gate, he had checked the other gates, they were all very well guarded and the walls were perfectly fine and guarded too. He reached the gate with his heart beating fast with all the nervousness and thrill. There were just as many guards here as before, even more so, since this was the biggest and main entrance to the city.

He noticed some of the guards were definitely familiar probably Lufius's men, so he couldn't act like a lost man to get some info from the guards.

He stuck around trying to get a sense of their security and patrolling patterns, there were guards on the tall wall every few feet, they were all the predator or bird types with sharp eyes that could see very far and in the dark, they were all in their hybrid forms, the advanced ones, in which they could only transform a certain part of their body. Ron had learned all this from hanging out with Emily and Weiss. The pair hadn't done anything wild again with him, thanks to Emily who had decided to reel it in since it would still be not good for her if someone discovered her fooling around with a human. He wanted to know more about the half-breeds and their powers because of what Rin had done in the battle. There seemed to be a lot of complexity in what he had presumed was a simple power.

Ron was brought out of his thoughts when he heard a familiar voice. He looked up and saw the princess, Vanessa, talking to some guards at the gate.

Ron hid more in the shadows as he tried to listen to what they were talking about, he couldn't hear them properly but it looked like she was trying to tell the guards to do something and the guards seemed to be not taking her seriously. Vanessa seemed a little agitated and the guards looked annoyed too.

Ron thought Derek would keep an eye on the princess since her dad had to contact her at some point, so logically she was the only person to have the most information, Ron thought that's how Derek would have thought.

But for once like others even he could just see and tell that the princess didn't know anything more either.

Ron didn't want to stay with her here, he would just have to come back and try again another time, he would give Derek the other information he had collected since then, maybe he might come up with an escape plan with that.

Ron turned and moved through the shadows of the houses back towards the castle. He was about two blocks away from the gate when he was stopped by someone putting a hand on his shoulder. Ron was frozen in complete shock, he cursed himself for being caught like this, it was so stupid, he was in a city of people with animal eyes, and staying in the shadows wasn't going to hide him, he should have just admitted to Derek that he couldn't do the mission, he had just been too excited since it was the first time Derek had given him a mission and he didn't want to let him down.

Ron turned slowly already thinking of a nice story that involved sleepwalking.

But he was again surprised to see the person who had stopped him was none other than Vanessa.

"Oh, hey what are you doing here?" Ron ended up saying too nervous to think clearly.

"I smelled you earlier, you are wreaking of sweat, you are not at all good at sneaking around, " she said.

"I wasn't sneaking around, and I am sweating because it's hot here, I am from the North the atmosphere's a lot cooler there, " said Ron shrugging.

"And you are not good at lying either, anyway, I just wanted to talk to you about the day you were at my window, remember, " she said.

"Oh, yeah sorry about that, I was just thinking about other stuff, " said Ron, now even more uncomfortable about the situation.

"Yeah, well you were right, I was being selfish, I shouldn't have acted like that with you either, in a way you really helped me, you were the first who talked his mind and was completely honest with me, and there's also the thing of you guys helping the city, you even saved Emily and Wiess's lives, and I shouted at you for that, as the princess it was my duty to thank you guys personally and help with the rehabilitation of the city, if my mother had seen me like that she would have been ashamed, you out me on the right path in time, so thank you, " said Vanessa.

Ron wasn't expecting a long thank you like that.

"It's all right, I was just saving the lives of innocent people, it shouldn't matter if they are humans or half-breeds, we are pretty much the same most of the time until you guys transform, " said Ron with a small chuckle at the end, trying to lighten the mood. Vanessa nodded agreeing and smiling.

"Where is Rin, by the way, I haven't seen her in a while?" asked Ron. He wanted to keep her mind away from how she had caught him and where they were standing right now, in a small dark alley.

"She went to the capital to get some answers, I asked her to, I was actually here to ask the guards if they had received any letter from her, and also to help with other things, I was telling them to send more guards in helping rebuilding the city, there is no need for so many guards on the walls, we are not going to get attacked by anyone from the land, " she said.

"Yeah, it is the sea you need to look at, but I don't think the barbarians are returning any time soon, " he said.

"So what were you doing out here?" she asked and Ron's hope was broken that she had forgotten about it.

"Oh I just couldn't sleep, thought I would check out the city more, I shouldn't have done so, I just didn't expect it to be so quiet, humans cities aren't this quiet even at night, " he made an answer quickly.

"They aren't quite here too, only after they have been attacked and lost a lot of people, anyway, like I said you are not a good liar, you know it isn't hard to guess what you were doing here, you guys have been in that tower for more than a week now, with no information, I am sure, there must have been some scheming and plotting being done in those two older human's minds, " said Vanessa looking down on him, she was a bit taller than him and had very piercing eyes. Ron wondered what was going to happen now.
