章節 41: Pick Your Poison

They kept their hands off each other long enough to prepare their dinner. They sat down at the table in the kitchen's breakfast nook.

She looked out the windows into the backyard. There was a large deck that ran the length of the rear of the house. There were two sets of patio furniture, one on each end of the deck. Three steps led to a stone patio. It had a built-in fireplace and a large grill with gas burners. About 15 feet from the patio is an inground pool, complete with a diving board and slide. On the far end, there was an inset hot tub. Beyond that, it was nothing but thick trees.

"So, when do I get the house tour?" she asked.

"We can when we're done with dinner."

She quickly stuffed her food into her mouth until she looked like a chipmunk storing nuts for the winter. She swallowed it down with a full glass of wine.

"Look at that, I'm all done. We did an excellent job. So, are you almost done?"

He laughed and wiped his mouth with his napkin. "I guess it's time for the tour."

He stood and took her hands, pulling her from the chair.

"Would you like to see my basement first?"

She laughed.

"What?" he asked.

"Do you have the slightest idea of how creepy that sounds?"

"Now that you mention it, I guess it does sound creepy. So do you want to see it?" he asked.

"Lead the way, but I will kick your ass if needed."

"Why do I think that's your idea of foreplay?"

He smiled at her and raised a single eyebrow.

"You're not wrong under certain circumstances," she said, biting her bottom lip.

He opened a door leading to a set of stairs and turned on a light. He walked down the steps, and she followed. His boots made a heavy thud with each step. Gray Berber carpet went down the steps and then through the basement. The walls were a brilliant white color. The recessed lighting made the walls bright, like the sun on snow.

"It's bright down here," she said

He flipped a couple of light switches, and the lights dimmed just enough.

"Better?"

"Much," she said.

She looked around. A regulation-size pool table with a red dust cover was in one section of the large area. She saw Pac-Man and Donkey Kong arcade games, full-sized, a Mr. T pinball machine, a standing soft-tip dartboard game, a leather couch big enough to fit eight people comfortably, two leather chairs, and the most giant flat-screen TV she had ever seen outside of a Best Buy. Speakers hung around the perimeter of the room.

"Well, here's the basement," he said. "See, not creepy at all."

He put his hands in his front pockets and rocked back and forth on his feet. He looked like a little boy.

"This is amazing. I can't get over how amazing this is," she said. "I also noticed an extremely nice regulation-size pool table. Is there something you would like to tell me?"

"Oh, I guess I play more than I alluded to. Don't be mad at me."

"So, you didn't need my hints, tips, and instructions?"

"I may not have needed them, but I sure as shit enjoyed them."

"How about at the range?"

"That I did need. And that's where I got the idea to allude to the fact I needed help with pool," he said.

"You know we are going to play sometime. Full on, all out, one on one."

"I'll do anything you want. That's one-on-one."

"So, want to see the rest?" he asked.

"You mean there's more?" she asked.

"Follow me." He waved her over to him and led her around the corner.

"There is a full bathroom if you need it. Now, this is my favorite part of the house," he said.

There was a full bar, 15 feet long, with a dozen barstools. The back bar had a complete display setting with glass shelves and lighting. Dozens of distinct-sized glasses: pint, rocks, wine, and brandy snifters. Under-the-counter coolers, wells, a triple sink, an ice well, and even a beverage gun. He could open a speakeasy tonight.

"I'm never going to Jake's again," she said. "Has this ever been used?"

"A few times. My sister likes to have people over; she doesn't like to clean it afterward. I have had some of the guys from work over a couple of times to watch College football. As soon as the word got out, I had a lot of people wanting to be my friend," he said.

She sat on the stool in the center of the bar. "Makayla would love this! We have danced at more than one bar, by the way. It's how we danced on them that got her a reputation."

"Oh, I would give anything to see you dancing on my bar."

"I just might. For you, I would dance like I was getting the reputation. Not that I don't already have one."

He didn't say anything. He knew better than that.

"How about a drink, barkeep," she said.

"Pick your poison." He walked around the bar.

"Do you have any specials?"

"Oh yeah."

He grabbed two-pint glasses and set them on the bar. He grabbed a bottle and threw it up, catching it behind his back. The next bottle he picked up, he spun on its side in the palm of his hand. He tossed The last one behind his back and caught it before him. He topped it all off with a squirt of Pepsi from the gun.

"Here you go, Miss. The best damn Long Island you will ever drink, at least until I make you the next one," he said.

She grabbed the drink and hopped down from the barstool. She took a swallow of her drink.

"Wow, this is really good. Strong, but good. So where did you learn to do all the flippy and spiny stuff?"

"At a bar in Jamaica where we never tell tales about a woman, she'll hear you no matter how far away she is, and Kokomo played on a continuous loop," he said.

He rolled a bottle down his arm and bumped it with his bicep. It hopped in the air, and he caught it.

"When did you do that? Before you joined the FBI?"

She took a large swig of her drink.

He came out from around the bar with a drink in hand. "Please tell me you're joking?" he said.

"About what?"

"We are watching a movie tonight," he said.

She finished her drink quickly, and he made another for her.

"I know there's more to this house than a basement and a kitchen," she said.

He followed her up the stairs, never taking his eyes off her ass.

"You can stop looking at my ass at any time."

"Sorry, I like to admire beautiful things."
