This must be just an ordinary person walking by, minding his business, but it was not so. It did not remove the fear she felt. This person seemed to be staring at her, his steps seemed to be directed at her, and worst of all, the night cold and the grave-quiet corridor were not helping.

The wind hushed past her ear, as if whispering that this was probably the best time to spin on her heel, that this was probably the best time to go back to her room and forget about the water. But Madeline remained rooted in that spot.

Her heartbeat was increasing with every passing second, and she could feel a shiver running down her toe. She was too frightened to run, too frightened to remove her gaze from what was in front of her. It was as if the fear had left her immobilized.
