"I will let you go once you stop thinking about leaving the country," Nathan declared, but Ava, unimpressed and expressionless, brushed off his hand.

"So, if I say I won't go abroad, would you let me leave now?" she challenged.

Nathan fell silent, aware that once Ava was out, she would inevitably bring up the topic of divorce. Moreover, his mother was pressing the issue intensely. If she shared Ava's intentions with the rest of the family, it might lead them to support the divorce as well.

He was unwilling to consider divorce. The only solution he saw to break this deadlock was to have a child. For the sake of the child, Ava might reconsider the divorce, and it would also prevent his mother from raising the issue again.

"I will let you leave, but not right now," Nathan finally spoke after a long pause.

Ava scoffed at his words, which sounded good but felt hollow.
