The newcomer didn't notice the younger girl's stare and looked over her shoulder to see her former mother-in-law. "This is my house, mother."
"This has ceased to be your house the day you left my son!"
"Mother, although Thomas and I have been divorced, Leon is still my son."
"He's not. And he's working now."
Grandma was not in the mood for small talk, and she crossed her arms as she stared at the former daughter-in-law with a bad look. "What are you here for?"
"You see, mother, I always felt guilty to you and Leon. I found a great place for you in the city."
Grandma frowned. "This is our house. We're still paying off the house, and we don't need you."
Her words made cracks in the woman's expression. "Mortgaged? The house is mortgaged?"
"How do you think we paid for my son's hospital bills? Not that you'd know because you hid like the rat that you are!"
