Chapter 89
Chapter Text
"So, here's what we know about everything so far," Weiss stated authoritatively, standing before the assembled group of JNPR and RWBYP with her arms crossed, a large screen projected behind her as she went through a presentation of all of the data they'd collated so far. "After months of trying to sneak out occasionally, and the occasional weekend patrol… Blake has found more or less nothing new about White Fang activity in the city. Not for lack of trying, considering none of us have managed to find anything while in the city either- the crime rate has dropped some , which is probably a result of there not being any recent Dust robberies, nor any large rallies. Yang hasn't managed to overhear anything at the store again either."
"Honestly, I'm surprised it happened twice," Yang interjected, thinking back to the previous semester- both when they'd learned about the raid on the docks, and when she'd overheard two White Fang goons talking about robbing a store later that day… for car parts. "But yeah, nothing."
"Well, we know that they've been moving southeast, that means they're heading residential, and it also means that they're holed up somewhere around there, right?" Blake posited, rubbing her chin and glancing down at her own scroll, which held just about as much usable data as Weiss'. Too bad Team CMNE was out on a mission this week- they seemed… weirdly tense? As though they'd learned something right before they left that spooked them.
Whatever it was, hopefully their big sister team hadn't found anything too bad.
"Southeast is also where that big grimm concentration was," Ruby stated whilst halfway buried in Penny's embrace, also frowning as she stretched her emotion senses out- rather to no avail, really, because even with her range growing larger over the years, Beacon was still far enough away from Vale and Mountain Glenn that she couldn't actually get anything but the fringes of emotion at the edges of her senses- far too far to do anything but sense minor pulses of negativity that might as well have been background noise. Ugh. "Mountain Glenn… it's full of grimm, though, so… I don't think the White Fang would have gone there? It's too dangerous- even Uncle Qrow said it was too hard for him to get further into the city than the outskirts cuz of how many grimm were concentrating…"
"That… is interesting," Pyrrha spoke up next, biting her lip as she reviewed the data on her own scroll, flipping through the presentation and looking through the maps, plot points, and figures that Weiss had added to the slides. "It seems that the amount of Dust robberies dropped off… almost the month before we went on break? And that there's been a large uptick in robberies around auto-shops and hardware stores…"
"Quite. I'm not entirely sure what that means beyond just the thought of the White Fang needing those supplies in particular, but there's a few theories, depending on what we find out in the near future," Weiss nodded, clicking to the next few slides and showing a map of where they'd all looked in the last few months, along with plotted points of how the robbery locations changed over time. "As you can see, and as Blake stated just now, the White Fang has been moving from the industrial district through the commercial district, and has been spotted occasionally making robberies in the residential areas of town. We don't know where they'll move next, but it's likely they'll continue to move across the city- how they've been managing to move so many people without it being noticed is… not something I'm aware of, but it's likely that they've been bolstering their numbers with new recruits given the amount that got arrested during the docks incident."
"The Fang does have a way of drawing in people to the cause- before the violent turn, sometimes they'd even bring in sympathetic humans who wanted to help," Blake sighed quietly, twirling a lock of hair around her finger and chewing her lip as she restlessly tapped her foot against the floor- she was the most invested in what the White Fang were doing out of anyone considering how long she'd been in the cause and just how much she worried about how the actions happening now would affect all faunus going forward… but it rankled at her that they hadn't been able to find much of anything, even with Professor Branwen helping out where he could. "Dammit. We don't know enough and it's killing me . What are they planning and why?"
"We don't know- we might never know. Hopefully, all we can do is figure out what's going on before it's too late and stop it before more people get hurt- and that might just involve sitting and waiting for a while," Jaune pointed out, resting his chin on his hands and frowning over the conversation. "I know none of JNPR has as much of a stake in this as you guys do, but we'll help out however we can- as my mom always said, many hands makes light work."
He paused, then chuckled. "Then again, that was her excuse to get all of us kids to do stuff instead of staying inside all day. Ah… good times. We never did get that window replaced."
"Jaune's home life aside, the only other thing we know about the White Fang's recent activities is that Roman Torchwick hasn't been seen in a long while, and that after he was broken out there was a short increase, and then a large decrease in the amount of Dust robberies. Something's changed and I don't know what it is or what we're going to do about it," Weiss finished, frowning as she sat back down at the table and huffed. "As for general White Fang business… Blake?"
"I haven't figured out anything about what they're planning for certain, but I think I've managed to figure out where the next rally is- Ever since Tukson…" Blake paused, taking a deep breath and digging her fingertips into the table with a heavy grimace, thinking back to the bookstore owner she'd called a friend , an ally, someone who could help support her and feed her info about the White Fang. Taken from the world so cruelly- so soon, so fast that she hadn't even known he'd died until she found his shop taped off, with the lingering scent of blood in the carpet. "Ever since… Tukson died… it's been harder to keep track of any of their movements. Even Tukson didn't really know, he just knew where smaller meetings were… I- the next meeting is in a warehouse on the edge of the Agricultural district, right over here… about a mile from that one Vacuo Bell that 'politely' asked Weiss to stop ordering fifty quesadillas at once."
Weiss huffed, crossing her arms haughtily. "Well excuse me for having an appreciation for foreign foods!"
"Vacuo Bell is about as Valean as Vacuo food gets, though," Yang muttered under her breath, furrowing her brow at Weiss in mild confusion.
"Shush, you."
"Right. Well, what are we going to do with the rally?" Jaune asked, speaking up again as he leaned forward, deferring leadership to RWBYP considering they were the ones actually doing most of the work with regards to their extracurricular heroics.
"Ruby and I will be infiltrating the rally in disguise- I still have an old White Fang mask and since they haven't updated the design since I left over a year ago, it should be easy to sneak in if I change my hairstyle. Ruby can just shapeshift and go in without suspicion," Blake answered, nodding at Ruby… who had spent the last few minutes making kissy noises with Penny, which everyone had been ignoring so far because, well, she had a big glowing eye on the back of her cape which was kinda just creepily watching all of them. "Ruby, you still in there?"
A single thumbs up was the only response, while Ruby continued kissing Penny nonstop. Well. That answered that.
"I'm almost jealous of how open they are," Pyrrha pointed out, then cleared her throat and looked over at Nora, who was buzzing in place with Ren's hand on her shoulder, barely keeping herself from blurting out some manner of non sequitur that would likely throw the entire meeting into chaos. "Once you infiltrate- then what?"
"WE'LL BREAK THEIR LEGS!"
And that was Nora.
"... Pretty much, yeah," Blake acquiesced after a moment's pause, waving vaguely at Nora with one hand. "If they reveal anything shady, or if we manage to get in deep enough- likely Ruby will, since she's the best at disguising herself out of all of us as long as it's in red, white, and black- then we might be able to get some actual information on their movements and plans, and then we can go in, fight the ones who won't leave, let the others go, and try and get Adam and Torchwick arrested again. I think that's… just about everything, right?"
"Pretty much, though I think it must be said that we'll likely be dead on our feet the day after due to the fact that the rally is on a Thursday evening," Weiss deadpanned, sighing and rubbing her forehead as she sent the time and date of the rally to everyone's scrolls- almost a month from now on a Thursday evening, at 10pm. "Hopefully the entire event goes quickly, but considering that Blake told us to block off a six hour portion of the night…"
"We're gonna need to take naps right after class then," Yang sighed, frowning a little and looking to the side. "Dammit, we're gonna need to eat on the way too cuz there's no way we'll have time for actually going to dinner on the way. How're we gonna get into Vale, though? There's no airships that'll take us after eight."
Penny cleared her throat, pulling away from Ruby just long enough to wave slightly and peek out. "I have an idea!"
"And… that would be?"
"We ride Ruby!"
"...."
There was a long moment of silence, then Ruby sighed and turned around, blushing heavily as her ears flicked and she shook her head. "I can turn into a Nevermore big enough to carry all of us, remember?"
"Ohhhh…"
"Oh yeah!"
"Riiight…"
"I remember that."
"Oh I thought she meant riding the big doggy mode…" Nora pouted, crossing her arms as a chorus of realizations spread around the table. "Okay, but how're we gonna get down cuz there's no way you're not setting off grimm alarms if you dive anywhere below, what, almost three thousand feet up? That's a really hard landing…"
"Petal Burst!"
Yang blinked. "Ruby, the last time you side-along'd anyone with Petal Burst, Weiss wouldn't stop dry heaving for ten minutes straight! Even Cinder and I can't handle Petal Burst super well and we've been trying for years now."
"Hey, it's only a short trip down!"
"Ruby, you grabbed me for a fifty meter dash using Petal Burst and I felt like I was being watched by nightmares for a half hour afterwards," Weiss deadpanned.
Ruby pouted, crossing her arms and huffing. "Penny's fine with it!"
"Indeed, while I do also feel the sensation of grimm matter picking at my soul, I simply remind myself that it is my girlfriend Ruby doing so, and it feels more like a hug than anything else!" Penny stated, smiling… though she did seem a little strained. "I am also incapable of feeling nausea, so that may also contribute."
Yang shuddered. "Ugh. Lucky you. Let's… keep brainstorming. We've got about a month, no point and putting everything on the meeting now."
"Yes, let's."
