章節 48: Last day at the academy
In the academy classroom, everyone was serious, well, not everyone, but most were. After a month of training with their clans, Ryo's classmates were ready to graduate today and become real ninjas. And of course, Ryo was also prepared.
The day started normally in the academy, with the theoretical exam being the first. Asuma had explained to them some time ago that if they failed this exam, they wouldn't pass. Ryo wondered how they could fail the students with just a written test.
As he had thought, once the exam was given, the questions were not related to the subjects they had learned but rather about scenarios of how a ninja should behave in certain situations, questions about hypothetical scenarios and how to react to them.
The practical exam had been designed to assess the mental fortitude of the students and their choices as future ninjas. Of course, there was no pressure in answering an imaginary scenario; it would be completely different from a real situation. Perhaps many there wouldn't survive some of the situations described in the test.
After a few minutes, Ryo finished the exam before anyone else, but not by much. Hyuga Yane and Haruka finished shortly after, but no one could leave the room yet. What they had to do was flip the paper over, lay down their pencils, and wait for everyone to finish or for Asuma to check the exams.
Being the first ones done, Asuma soon picked up the three exams and began reading them one by one. He had a neutral expression on his face with an unlit cigarette in his mouth. He glanced a few times at the exams and then at the three who had finished.
"Ryo, Yane, and Haruka, you can move on to the next phase. Wait at the training field," he announced, indicating that the three had passed the theoretical exam and could proceed. Ryo was curious to know how he had done, but the important thing was to pass all the exams.
"The questions were different from what I imagined. But it makes sense since we'll become real ninjas when we're done here," said Yane as they left the classroom. Haruka chimed in, "Yeah! Those questions had a lot of varied scenarios, and there could be more than one answer."
Ryo didn't comment as they walked. He looked at the two and could see that they seemed eager to become ninjas, as if the world were beautiful. Then he spoke calmly, "The ninja world is beautiful, but the side we don't see is terrible."
In his mind, images of what had happened with the Uchihas, with Sae, and also the recent incident with Kentou flashed quickly. These were memories that reminded him that the real ninja world wasn't just flowers and beautiful fights.
After arriving at the test site, an open field with markings on the ground for combat areas, Ryo sat down on the ground and began arranging some kunai and shurikens, seeing what he would need to use today. Then he thought, "I won't use the coins; there's no need. At the moment, I imagine only the Hyuga could give me trouble if I attacked them up close."
After another 40 minutes, more students slowly arrived at the site, but what impressed Ryo was that there weren't many, in the end, only those who were always among Ryo were there for the combat phase; Ryo, Hyuga Takeo, Hyuga Yane, Sarutobi Denji, Inuzuka Yuuto, and Haruka Asahina. But for some reason, the Senjus weren't among them.
Once the six students gathered at the site, Asuma appeared after a few minutes and began speaking to them. He didn't look too pleased; he seemed more serious than usual. "The exams are over, but with a different outcome than expected. Only you are deemed fit to proceed to become ninjas."
He picked up a scroll and opened it, and several small objects came out, each a rectangular piece of metal surrounded by cloth. Ryo knew what they were, they were headbands with the symbol of Konoha.
"You won't need a combat test anymore. However, you'll be on a probationary period for a few missions, with the team leaders assigned to you in a few days. But for now, congratulations! You're all ninjas now. I expect great things from all of you."
Ryo held the headband in his hands, feeling a weight settling on his chest. Now he would truly begin the life of a ninja, and the biggest problem was that he wouldn't really know what would happen in the next few years until Naruto almost graduated from the Ninja Academy.
But that's what motivated him. He could become stronger and discover new things that happened before the next canonical events, and also become stronger until Kakashi's team was formed.
"So. Are we free to go, Asuma-sensei?" Ryo asked as he looked ahead, slowly tying the headband around his forehead. "Yes. You can go. You'll receive a call when the teams are ready." With that, Ryo flickered away at a good speed, disappearing from the scene.
After a few minutes, Ryo was on the roof of his house, well, Naruto's house, but it was the same building. Then he arranged the headband on his forehead, taking a deep breath as he placed his hand over his chest.
"Damn old man and his Will of Fire," he thought with a slight smile. It's not that he didn't like the idea of the Will of Fire, but he knew it was used to make young ninjas die for the village and much more. Ryo had become a genin; soon he could learn new jutsus and go on missions with a team.
Elsewhere in Konoha, Hiruzen was with a team of medics analyzing a message. A secret message that had been recovered from Kentou. One of the medics, wearing a white outfit that only left his eyes open, spoke.
"We managed to analyze part of the content of the secret message, Hokage-sama. It's a set of rare medicinal herbs that are used individually for various things, but together they don't make much sense, at least not that we know of."
Hiruzen then pondered for a few moments. "Keep analyzing possible combinations. Kentou wouldn't do this without a reason. Perhaps they tried to kill him because of this too. But very well, carry on." With that, he left the area, promptly receiving a report on what had happened in Ryo's class. Hiruzen furrowed his brow, not expecting something like this.
