章節 7: (07) Calm before the storm

I looked at my status window with a bit of satisfaction. Especially when seeing the maxed out Ackerman bloodline. It took me three years of gruelling pain to get that final level and a half but it was worth it. My overall physical attributes, shot up like crazy. I could move small boulders and shake trees with my bare hands, it was amazing. But that wasn't it, that Ackerman rage, focus mode thing or whatever, was so much easier to fall into, and didn't drain me nearly as much. Granted I couldn't just tap into it at any minor inconvenience, but if I truly focused my senses on a particular objective, it would happen. When I finally maxed the bloodline out, the message about a possible evolution came up. I needed, 5 points, but I only had 3. One of those points were rewarded to me by the system for getting first place in the cadet corps, and the other two were the rewards for passing the cadet corps with the best grades in history.
I spent a lot of time these last three years, practicing martial arts. Or at least trying to. It was difficult because I couldn't actually spar with anyone. They all avoided me like I was the plague when Martial Arts class came around.
"Commander Erwin! Kill those damned titans for us!". The energitic shouts of some citizens made me and the other cadets look towards a blond man in the front leading other soldiers outside the walls.

'Damn, he's a lot stronger than I thought he'd be'.
I used observe a few more times on varying soldiers, surprised at their power levels and skills. The Survey Corps were definitely cut from a different cloth, especially the more experienced ones. I also saw Hange, and I unfortunately made the mistake of using observe on her and reading her thoughts. A trauma I will not recover from.
"Look! It's captain Levi! They say he's as strong as an entire brigade!".
My eyes turned towards the back of the group, as I saw a shorter guy with black hair curtained to the side and an undercut looking at the crowd with an irritated expression. The legend himself, Levi.

'Sheesh. He's seriously built different. I've never even seen anyone with a B in potential until now.'
For a few moments, Levi's eyes narrowed as they met mine. We just sort of awkwardly looked at each other before he turned away with a huff. 'Wonder what his problem was'.
"This place is way different from 5 years ago". Eren smiled looking at the cheerful atmosphere. It was definitely comforting.
"Well, nothing bad has happened in the last five years, a good omen for the people!". I turned my head slightly at the new voice and saw two people from the cadet corps. It was a ginger haired girl called Hannah, and a lanky guy called Franz.
"And the cannons have improved by a lot too! Maybe they'll scare the big titans off!", Franz added.
"Eh, did you guys turn delusional from being in love?"
The couple instantly blushed and denied any sort of accusations, looking away from each other awkwardly.
"You guys are so- ah whatever". Eren shook his head sighing at their antics. He couldn't quite believe they were still acting like this after making it so obvious they liked each other.
"Yo, you guys", I turned around again, along with Eren, Armin and Mikasa, hearing a familiar voice.
"Hannes!"
"Haha, heard you guys graduated. Man it's hard to believe you guys are the little kids I remember". He looked at us one by one with a little bit of pride in his eyes.
"What about you Hannes? You went from a useless drunk to a captain of the combat engineers.", Eren said with a smile.
"Eh? Listen to this guy". Hannes jokingly smacked Eren's forehead, pretending to be offended. The smile wiped off his face though as he looked at Eren head on.
"I'm still sorry. I wasn't able to save your mother."
"It wasn't your fault Hannes. We aren't naïve kids anymore. I'll never let anything that sad happen again". Eren shook his head, dismissing Hannes' apology, he'd already forgiven him long ago.
"Anyway, I've gotta run or else I'm gonna be late for my last training exercise". We all said goodbye to Eren before I also split off from the group.
I walked around with no particular destination in mind, just lost in thought. I could feel my mood sour as I watched the great atmosphere in trost. 'How many people are going to die?', I wondered.
I knew of the events that would transpire here today, and I also know I could have prevented them if I killed Annie, Reiner and Bertolt. In the end it was my own weakness that stopped me from acting out. I hesitated more and more the longer I waited as I got to know all of them in the three years. And that very weakness would damn many people to their deaths today. On screen, although the deaths may have been sad for a few moments, they'd be soon forgotten as just simple side characters. Some didn't even have the honor of having their names mentioned. This was real life though. Behind every person was a story, family that was awaiting their return, dreams that they wished to accomplish.
I continued to wander around Trost, lost in my thoughts until I heard a loud rumbling noise and saw a flash of light in the distance. 'It's started'.
"I'm sorry".
