章節 268: -264- The last day of summer

The next day, the last day of summer vacation, finally arrived.

By this time tomorrow, students of all grades would be back in their classrooms, starting the second semester and resuming their competitive pursuits.

Perhaps understanding how precious these peaceful moments at Advanced Nurturing High School were, more and more students stepped out of their rooms on the final day of summer vacation. Some left with friends, laughing and chatting, while others went out alone.

Even Horikita Suzune had gone out several times during this summer vacation.

This was a very surprising development.

Previously, Horikita Suzune would have stayed in her room reading books, never coming out to socialize or play. But the events of the special exams and Horikita Manabu's complete disregard for her had pushed her to change.

These changes were still very subtle.

At least, while Horikita Suzune had made some concessions, she only went out when Kushida Kikyou invited her. Asking her to take the initiative to invite someone was out of the question.

Today was no different.

Today, Horikita Suzune had planned to either go out if invited or stay in her room reading if not.

As it turned out, an invitation did come.

However, this invitation immediately quashed her willingness to compromise.

Because...

"I would even accept Kushida's invitation, but I absolutely don't want to accept this guy's."

This was Horikita Suzune's last stand.

It wasn't just because she couldn't agree with his methods during the special exams.

Recalling how he had talked on equal terms with her brother, even getting the upper hand, and then rejected her brother's invitation without hesitation, throwing away his contact information as if it were garbage, her mood soured.

Perhaps even Horikita Suzune herself didn't realize that this was her way of denying that he had subtly surpassed her brother.

From a young age, her brother was the person she looked up to.

Outstanding.

Cold.

Her brother's every aspect was impeccable. In elementary and middle school, he always stood out among his peers, admired by all.

Horikita Suzune aspired to this "strength" and "excellence," secretly vowing to catch up to her brother's shadow.

This was why she excelled in her talents.

Therefore, from childhood to now, her brother was the strongest in her mind.

Now, this most outstanding brother seemed to have finally met a match, encountering someone she found insufferable.

He handled her brother's questions calmly and nonchalantly, even seeing through some of her brother's actions.

She had witnessed his abilities many times on the uninhabited island and luxury cruise ship, yet she refused to acknowledge them.

Even her brother was treated like any other student, with his actions mercilessly exposed, as if her brother were an ordinary person.

How could Horikita Suzune feel good about this?

In her words...

"Even though that ability is precious, I still can't approve of it."

That's all there was to it.

In short, it was just a girl's stubbornness, to be ignored.

Therefore, Horikita Suzune's current affection for that man was in the negatives. Even if she had to compromise, it wouldn't be to him.

And she had no interest in swimming pools.

So when she received his email, Horikita Suzune made up her mind.

"Don't think you can really do anything."

Horikita Suzune rejected him without hesitation.

She had forgotten something crucial about him.

When he wanted to do something, he always had a plan.

Knowing her personality, he still sent the invitation because he was confident.

He didn't say anything but sent her a photo.

Horikita Suzune still remembered her feelings upon seeing that photo.

Panic, shame, anger, and regret all intertwined.

With such emotions, she reluctantly agreed, feeling humiliated.

Now, carrying a bag, Horikita Suzune sighed as she took the elevator to the first floor of the first-year dormitory.

"I really don't want to go out…"

Her determination to change was shaken by this event.

When she arrived at the first-floor lobby, she found two girls already there.

They noticed her arrival and turned to her.

"Good morning, Horikita-san."

Kushida Kikyou waved with a cute smile.

"G-Good morning…"

Sakura Airi greeted her nervously, shrinking back a bit.

The two contrasting greetings affected Horikita Suzune differently.

While Kushida Kikyou smiled brightly, Horikita Suzune saw no genuine happiness in her eyes, making her feel unwelcome. Kushida remained as insincere as ever.

On the other hand, Sakura Airi's timid behavior might be seen as weak but felt genuine, easing Horikita Suzune's mood.

Seeing these two, Horikita Suzune understood.

"You were invited by him too?"

Horikita Suzune asked.

As expected, both girls confirmed.

"Nanaya-kun rarely invites me, so I came," Kushida said, as if it was a joyous occasion, giving the impression that she was happy to hang out with even difficult people.

Only Horikita Suzune could sense Kushida's insincerity.

Kushida cherished any chance to interact with him but might also be wary of Horikita getting too close to him, wanting to know what they did together.

Horikita felt thoroughly disliked by Kushida.

Sakura Airi explained, "I… I also came because Nanaya-kun invited me…"

Sakura's nervousness made sense.

As a hidden idol in Class D, she was very close to him and stayed distant from others, regardless of gender, always running away. She wouldn't likely reject his invitation.

Who knows what method he used to deceive her?

"Horikita-san also got invited by Nanaya-kun? I thought you'd refuse. This is rare," Kushida said, smiling.

Thinking of this, Horikita Suzune's mood soured again.
