章節 203: Chapter 203: "The Battle in the Forest Part - 1"

The Forbidden Forest was eerily quiet as Remus Lupin and Neville Longbottom cautiously made their way through the dense undergrowth. Lupin's heightened werewolf senses were on high alert, his nostrils flaring as he tried to catch the scent of Charles, Ron, and Hermione.

"Stay close, Neville," Lupin whispered, his wand at the ready. "And be prepared to run if I tell you to."

Neville nodded nervously, his own wand trembling slightly in his grip. The darkness of the forest seemed to press in on them, making every shadow appear menacing. The boy's round face was pale in the dim light filtering through the canopy.

"Professor," Neville whispered, his voice barely audible, "do you think they're okay?"

Lupin paused, choosing his words carefully. "We have to believe they are, Neville. Charles, Ron, and Hermione are resourceful. But we need to find them quickly."

They pressed on, the silence broken only by their muffled footsteps and the occasional hoot of an owl. After what felt like hours but was likely only minutes, Lupin suddenly froze. His keen ears had picked up the faint sound of voices.

Signaling for Neville to stay quiet, he crept forward, following the sound. As they drew nearer, Lupin's blood ran cold. He recognized those voices – the cruel, mocking tones of the Lestranges and the wheedling voice of Peter Pettigrew. Fear gripped his heart as he realized Charles and the others had been captured by the Death Eaters.

"It's them," he breathed, his face ashen. "The Death Eaters have Charles and the others."

Neville's eyes widened in terror. "What do we do?" he whispered, his voice shaking.

Lupin's mind raced. They had not stumbled upon an adventure gone wrong, as he had initially hoped. This was a carefully laid trap. Thinking about the Unforgivables, Lupin understood that Hermione might have been under the Imperius Curse, used as bait to lure Charles out. His mind raced with the implications, guilt washing over him for not realizing the danger sooner.

He wanted nothing more than to charge in and save Charles, but he couldn't risk Neville's life. Turning to the boy, he whispered urgently, "Neville, we need to go back. We have to get help."

"But Professor," Neville protested, a flicker of Gryffindor courage shining through his fear, "we can't just leave them!"

Lupin placed a reassuring hand on Neville's shoulder. "I promise I'll come back for them, Neville. But right now, the best thing we can do is get reinforcements. We're outnumbered and outmatched."

Reluctantly, Neville nodded. They began to retreat, moving as quietly as possible. But before they could get far, a shimmering in the air around them signaled the triggering of a ward. Lupin's heart sank as he realized they had been discovered.

"Run, Neville!" he shouted, all pretense of stealth abandoned.

But it was too late. Suddenly, spells erupted from the darkness. Lupin pushed Neville down, deflecting curses as best he could. The air filled with maniacal laughter as the Death Eaters emerged from the shadows, surrounding them.

Bellatrix's wild eyes gleamed with triumph as she stepped into the clearing. "Look what we have here," she cackled. "The werewolf and the Longbottom brat. How kind of you to finish Wormtail's job for him."

Pettigrew emerged from behind her, his watery eyes darting nervously between Lupin and Bellatrix. Lupin felt a surge of rage at the sight of his former friend.

"This werewolf is really your friend, rat," Bellatrix continued, her voice dripping with mockery. "Now we have both boys. I will have fun with them before eventually sending them to their fate."

Lupin's face contorted with fury. He placed himself protectively in front of Neville, his wand raised. "You won't touch my students," he snarled. "I'll die before I let you harm them."

Bellatrix's eyes glittered with malice. "Oh, how noble," she mocked. "But don't worry, wolf. Death will come soon enough."

Without warning, curses flew from the Death Eaters' wands. Lupin deflected and dodged as best he could, pushing Neville behind him. But he was outnumbered, and his reactions were slowed by his weakened state due to the proximity to the full moon.

"Crucio!" Bellatrix shrieked, and this time, Lupin couldn't block in time.

The curse hit him square in the chest, and he fell to the ground, his body wracked with unimaginable pain. He could hear Neville's terrified cries, but he couldn't move, couldn't protect him.

Unknown to the Death Eaters and the others as well, Harry Potter had arrived, hidden beneath his Invisibility Cloak. He watched in horror as Lupin writhed on the forest floor, Neville cowering behind him.

Harry's mind raced, searching for a solution that wouldn't end in tragedy. He was confident in his ability to defeat the Death Eaters, but not when he had to protect the lives of others. He had been trained to fight while ensuring his own safety, not the safety of bystanders. The situation was far more complex than he had anticipated.

For a brief, dark moment, Harry considered simply eliminating the threat permanently. This was the only way he could save everyone and end this trouble with complete confidence. With his precise cutting curses, he could end the battle in seconds. But he knew he couldn't. This wasn't wartime, and he had no legal right to take such drastic action. The consequences would be severe and inescapable.

As he watched Lupin suffer under Bellatrix's curse, Harry made a decision. He would tackle the problem in stages. First, he needed to rescue Charles, Ron, and Hermione. Then he could deal with the Death Eaters. That would reduce the number of hostages and make the next fight easier. Also, he might be able to create traps in that location and attract the Death Eaters to take them out quickly without any casualties. This was the safest plan he could come up with on such short notice. He hoped Neville would not be hurt. Lupin could handle the pain, but Harry was worried about Neville.

With that thought, Harry silently made his way to where Charles, Ron, and Hermione were being held. With quick counter spells, he began to free them from their bonds.

"Harry?" Charles whispered, his eyes wide with a mixture of relief and fear.

Harry pressed a finger to his lips, signaling for silence. But it was too late. Ron, overcome with relief, let out a strangled "Thanks, Harry!" before Harry could stop him.

The sound carried in the quiet forest, alerting the Death Eaters to another presence. Harry cursed inwardly as he heard Bellatrix's enraged shriek.

"Someone else is here!" she yelled. "Find them!"

Harry turned to the trio, his voice urgent. "Run. Get back to the castle and get help. Go!"

There was no option of the trio staying with Harry and helping him in the fight. Harry's tone made it clear that they understood that. Also, the trio knew in their minds that they could offer no help in this scenario and the best they could do was to quickly get help.

As Charles, Ron, and Hermione disappeared into the darkness, Harry steeled himself for the confrontation to come. The real battle was about to begin.
