29.59% Unbroken Charm / Chapter 29: That's a promise

章節 29: That's a promise

Charm spoke without thinking.

Not caring how her nonchalant words would affect the others in the room.

Her careless words lit a fire in Lucien's stomach.

Many would kill to get their hands on spirit power and this girl was willing to give it away without another thought.

Since she did not understand the impact of what she just said.

Then Lucien would teach her a lesson she'll never forget.

Turning to Miguel he said dismissively, "Take them to the simulation room."

"Sir, that room is advanced, why not let them do the introduction room first?" broached Miguel carefully.

He knew first hand his leader's temper and that he may come to regret this decision later.

"Are you questioning my orders, Miguel?" Lucien's voice thundered, "Perhaps, you need to get reacquainted with our solitary confinement chambers."

"No Sir, your words are absolute. I will take my leave and do as you command," Miguel responded quickly.

He made a deep bow and grabbed a hold of Charm's hand and started dragging her with him.

"Loosen your grip… it hurts.. Where are you taking me?" cried Charm.

She struggled against Miguel but he was like an invincible hulk her efforts were futile against his inhuman strength.

Charm turned her head to Zinc, "are you just going to stand there and watch as Miguel takes me away, do something!"

Zinc's expression said, "oh, so you want my help now."

Lucien and Zinc exchanged looks and it was Lucien who spoke first.

"You don't have to go with them. You can just sit with me and tell me more about your father's last days."

Zinc replied, "We'll have to catch up some other time, old man. Wherever she goes, I'll go too."

"Where is this loyalty coming from? From what Miguel told me, you only know the girl less than a week and you're willing to risk your life for her, I just don't get it."

"It doesn't matter to me, if you get it or not, frankly speaking it's none of your business, but if anything happens to Charm during these fancy tests of yours, I'll hunt you to the corners of the earth and that's a promise."

"Get out of my sight, all of you," he slumped in his chair as he watched their retreating backs, never in all his years of recruiting had he felt so mentally exhausted.

That Zinc really was something else.

The whole time they had been arguing Lucien had been pushing his spirit power into the boy in a bid to break down his defenses.

It seems his father taught him well Zinc's mental barriers were impenetrable.

Lucien eagerly turned on the CCTV.

He had several monitors around his room that slid down the moment the trio exited.

This month's batch of recruits was already proving to be quite promising and he didn't want to miss a moment of their performance.

While all of this might seem new and shocking to Charm it was nothing out of the ordinary for Zinc.

For as long as Zinc could remember he had visited places like this all his child with his beloved parents.

The locations might be different but the tests they conducted on humans were all the same.

They were nothing but large underground research institutes that remained hidden in the shadows.

To conduct tests in the interest of spirit power development.

Zinc had been fortunate to be born with both offensive and defensive powers.

From an early age his father taught him how to hide his powers.

So that he would seem weak and powerless in the eyes of those who would seek to take advantage of him.

His father had taught him to be self-reliant on his own strengths rather than depend on spirit power.

Now they were about to be guinea pigs for another experimental test.

He assumed it was to seek out those who could be useful in the upcoming wars against the demons.

Zinc might have been aware of his powers but he was not much different from Charm.

Right now, he may have sent an empty threat to Lucien.

Since his parents died Zinc neglected his training and considered himself mentally and physically unfit.

He felt subpar in comparison to the spirit warriors on the ships.

Even the level entry guards were superior to him.

For Zinc had an untrained body and was also undeveloped in his spirit usage.

In a fight against those continuously training with spirit powers he would surely lose.

The locust demons were level 0 demons and considered bottom feeders.

They had been in captivity for numerous years and were too busy eating each other just to survive.

Level 1 demons and higher were not that lacking in intelligence and would be harder to defeat the more levels they advanced.

"All personnel for the level 1 test please gather in the waiting room. The doors to the simulation room will open at 3:00 p.m.," came from loudspeakers perched high on the wall.

They took the lift in silence which made the descent into the bowels of the ship seem even more intimidating.

Miguel brushed against Charm and she flinched.

It annoyed her greatly, sandwiched between two young men she couldn't let them know just how terrified she felt.

In a bid to cover her nervousness, Charm attempted to break the silence one more time.

"Miguel, I know we may have got off on the wrong foot earlier," she coaxed. "Seeing as you are tasked with being our mentor all can be forgiven if you give some idea about this upcoming test."

As if accepting the white flag for a temporary truce, Miguel let out a deep sigh before he spoke.

"Not all of the level one tests are the same but there are three things that are standard and never change in the test. It tests your agility, your reasoning ability and spirit power level."

He could not go any further with them as the waiting room was considered part of the testing grounds.

They were slowing down in the corridor so Zinc and Charm could tell they were almost at their final destination based on Miguel's body language.

"All personnel for the level 1 test please gather in the waiting room. The doors to the simulation room will open at 5:00 p.m."

"It's that recording again, what time is it Miguel?"

"It's almost 2:00," he responded.

"Just what are we going to do for the next three hours," she queried.

"You will soon find out," Miguel replied gruffly.

Miguel exerted enough strength to shove them both into a room crowded with other young people close to their age.
