Liao En said, "Actually, there are several different theories about how supernatural power came about. The first is that supernatural power is a gift from God to supernatural beings. This power comes from the being absorbing a certain type of molecule in nature at birth. Their offspring usually also have supernatural powers of varying levels. Only after supplementing innate conditions with effort, can they become powerful enough to counteract technological weapons. This theory is quite vague and has few believers. The other theory, the mainstream, believes that supernatural beings are the result of some gene mutation. This gene mutation gives supernatural beings powers that ordinary humans do not possess. And what we are seeing now is the result of these mutated genes being passed down. In the Holy Alliance, there are supporters of both theories, forming two major factions, but these factions do not oppose each other. The Phil Family, whom we are part of, believe in the second theory. We have always thought that this explanation is the most logical and scientifically sound."

Sky Scar nodded and said, "I too believe the second theory is more scientifically sound. Genes are one of the most mysterious things in the human body — when they mutate, the outcomes are unimaginable. From the standpoint of genetics, there are two types of studies in chemical genetics: forward and reverse. Forward chemical genetics involves discovering small molecules that can cause biological processes to change and identifying proteins that can affect these small molecules to hypothesize potential mechanisms. Reverse chemical genetics involves discovering small molecules that can selectively inhibit or activate known protein targets and observing the effects of these small molecules on cells and organisms. From a current understanding, both of these approaches are inadequate. Truly researching the origin of supernatural abilities might be an exceptionally lengthy process, perhaps even impossible to discover."

Liao En praised, "Indeed, you are worthy of being an honor student at Academy of Zhongting, your analysis is correct. As things stand, no one can definitively conclude anything. Therefore, there's no need to overthink this issue. Actually, there is an inherent unfairness to being a supernatural being. Those of us who discover supernatural existence later in life, like you and I, are the most common supernatural beings. However, some supernatural beings are born with supernatural powers — this instance can be quite terrifying. Examples are Madame Oya and Miss Lan Lan."

Sky Scar asked in surprise, "Is Miss Lan Lan also a supernatural being?"

"Of course, Miss Lan Lan is the heir to the entire Phil Family. At her birth, her supernatural power had reached the seventh level. Only Madame Oya could approach her without being attacked. She is the most talented and highest-level supernatural being in the history of the Holy Alliance. She has the potential to become the youngest Manipulator or even succeed her grandfather's position as a Judge."

Liao En's lean face revealed a hint of aspiration, "You don't understand yet. Manipulator not only signifies power but also prowess and glory. To become a Manipulator, one can control at least a medium-sized Administrative Star, and that is the synonym of honor. Maybe, there is no hope for me in this lifetime."

Somewhat surprised, Sky Scar said, "Why would there be no hope? Supernatural power can progress through cultivation, and with your current status, you could at least live longer via the Metamorphosis Technique. Someday you might reach the ability of a Manipulator."

Liao En shook his head, "It's not that simple. If it were as you say, perhaps there wouldn't be so few Judges and Manipulators. When supernatural power reaches a certain level, progress becomes very difficult. Honestly, I'm very envious of Miss Lan Lan; she has such good pre-existing conditions, conditions which I lack.
