Avery Miller shrank back, her neck recoiling as she timidly looked up at his furious face. 

"I... I just needed to use the restroom," she whispered, her voice barely louder than a mosquito's buzz, fearful that even this would anger him.

Seeing his anger hadn't subsided, and feeling the pain from his tight grip on her hand, Avery felt a wave of fear wash over her. 

"I don't need to go anymore," she said, lowering her head to look at her bare feet, noticing for the first time that she wasn't wearing socks and her feet were cold against the floor.
