They quickly hailed a taxi, both sitting in the backseat, silent all the way to the school. 

As they got out, Elijah Martinez found his tumultuous thoughts settling down. 

Elijah looked at her, bidding her goodnight with a sense of calm.

Avery Miller smiled. Despite the day's terrifying and heart-pounding events, having him by her side made her feel less afraid and alone. 

"Thank you," she said. Without waiting for his response, she added, "Goodnight," then turned and ran back to her dorm.

Avery knew Elijah had feelings for her, feeling the kindness he extended far beyond what one would expect from mere classmates or even friends. 

But she begged forgiveness in her heart, unable to reciprocate his feelings. 

Not just because of Jessica and Sarah Wilson, but because she felt unworthy of anyone's love now.
