章節 76: Power Outage

The base commander pondered for a moment, deciding to heed his advice. Just as he was about to give orders, Hurley added, "Make sure to prepare a generator."

Before he could inquire further, a knock on the door interrupted them. An executive hurriedly entered, "Half of the base's power lines have been damaged by rats, and now a significant portion of the base is without electricity."

Base Commander: "..." This highlighted the importance of having a generator.

The Allen family's apartment building was also affected by the power outage.Fortunately, they had a generator, ensuring that the power outage did not impact their use of the electrical grid.Since arriving at the base, the generator had not been used.Alice was in the process of powering up the electrical grid when she casually noticed two women standing outside the large iron door at the staircase. She pretended not to see them.

The two women thought she might inquire, but Alice completely ignored them.

"Hello, we're neighbors living downstairs. Do you still have that network? The one with electricity. Can we buy it from you?"The apartment building was not lacking in people who observed how others lived. They had long set their sights on the Allen family.

Occasionally, when they encountered members of the Allen family in the elevator and greeted them, the Allen family members just nodded without saying a word. After a few times, the people in the building directly ignored them, treating the Allen family as gossip after dinner.

It wasn't until the invasion of mutant rats that they realized only the Allen family had no losses, all thanks to the network outside.

"You can make it yourself with iron wire, then connect it to electricity," Alice casually replied.

The two man outside looked embarrassed. "We don't have iron wire, and we don't have a generator."

Alice looked at them coldly, "I've already told you the method; figure out the rest yourselves."

"I'll trade with food," the other man hastily said, "We'll handle the electricity ourselves, just sell us the iron wire, okay?"Alice pondered for a moment and then nodded, "Okay, it's a deal. Twenty pounds of rice for a bundle of iron wire."

The man's expression stiffened, his dark face filled with hesitation, revealing from his worn-out attire that he hadn't been living well. Even if the man appeared pitiful, Alice wouldn't relent, waiting for his decision.

After a while, the man nodded slowly, his eyes filled with helplessness, "Fine, I'll trade."

The other man who came with him remained silent, just staring at Alice, half of his face hidden in the darkness.

The man who agreed to the trade quickly went downstairs to fetch the rice. Alice pretended to enter her house but retrieved a bundle of iron wire from her storage space.

"Twenty pounds of rice, not a grain less. You can weigh it yourself." The man held up a bag of rice in a red plastic bag.

Alice opened the large iron door, took the bag of rice, checked its weight to ensure it was sufficient, and then examined the bag for any adulteration.

Satisfied, Alice nodded, about to give him the iron wire when a dark figure rushed forward. She narrowed her eyes, lifted her foot, and kicked the person to the ground without hesitation. She didn't hold back as she stepped down, causing the man to writhe in pain, screaming repeatedly.

Alice gave a cold look to the man who was exchanging rice, suspecting if the two had colluded beforehand.

He was startled and quickly distanced himself, "I don't know him, has nothing to do with me."

Seeing that he seemed genuine, Alice handed him the iron wire and promptly locked the iron door.

A thick fog enveloped the entire base, with half of the area experiencing a power outage, plunging the entire base into darkness. The base mobilized everyone to eliminate the mutant rats. People, concerned for their own safety, temporarily set aside their prejudices against the base.

That night, everyone prepared traps, lurking in the shadows, ready to strike. All preparations were complete, just awaiting the crucial moment. Yet, this wait extended to two hours.

At 3 o'clock in the morning, the mutant rats still hadn't appeared.

Confusion gripped the crowd. Had the mutant rats gained intelligence, realizing the traps were set, and decided not to come?

Alice stood on the balcony, watching the disappointed crowd below. They had spent the entire afternoon setting up traps, eagerly awaiting to capture all the mutant rats, only to end up with nothing.

People comforted each other, "The mutant rats must be scared off by us and dare not come."

"Yes, let's look at the bright side. The traps are there; any that come, we catch. Come in pairs, catch a pair."

"Even if the mutant rats are cunning, they are just animals. Let them practice for a few hundred years before challenging humans."

Laughter echoed among the group. Those who believed they had set a foolproof trap went home to sleep with ease.

Arnold, staring at the dark horizon not far away, had a premonition, "They are celebrating too early."

Alexander remarked, "You should go down and tell them."

Arnold glanced at him, "If you want to get beaten up, I can fulfill your wish."

Alice: "..."

That night, the mutant rats did not appear. People, disturbed for days, finally slept soundly.

The Allen family continued to live happily. Alice brought out three king crabs and lamb chops from her storage space.

"We'll have these tonight. If there's anything else you want to eat, just let me know," Alice said with a smile.

Alexander, excited, let out a howl and hugged Alice without hesitation, "How am I so fortunate to have such a wonderful sister."

Alice, supporting her forehead, chuckled."By the way, all the traps downstairs. Be careful when you go out. Someone's foot got caught in a rat trap just now, and they fainted from the pain on the spot," Blanche reminded.

Atticus added, "Those rat traps are specifically designed for dealing with mutant rats, much larger than regular ones."

The thick fog over the entire base grew denser, reducing visibility. The large rat traps placed in front of them were now barely visible.

"Now, going out has become like being 'blind.' We have to use a stick to feel around in front, behind, left, and right to make sure there are no traps before we can walk. The base advises not to go out temporarily."

Alice hadn't left her house these days

The second night, the third night, and still no sign of the mutant rats.

Many held on to a sense of luck, thinking the mutant rats had gone to attack other places and wouldn't return for a while. They believed the traps set could be removed.

Traps were scattered all over the base, and there was always a possibility of stepping into one at any moment. People had to be extremely cautious when walking outside. Such days filled with frustration and anger.

Unable to withstand the pressure from the clamoring crowd, the base could only promise that if the mutant rats didn't come within a week, they would remove the traps.

Alice paid no attention to the various policies of the base. In essence, it had little to do with her, and she didn't need to rely on the base for survival. So, she decided to grow mushrooms. There were exactly three large bags of mushroom cultivation kits in her storage space. They hadn't been suitable for planting due to either being too hot or too cold before, but now was the perfect time.

With ready-made mushroom kits, the process was not difficult. Alice took out three flower pots, placed the kits inside, opened the outer packaging, sprayed water to keep them moist, and waited for a few days for the mushrooms to grow.

Blanche was very attentive to the mushrooms, checking whether they were moist enough every day. Seeing this, Alice assumed the role of a hands-off manager.

After a week passed without the mutant rats appearing, the base relaxed its vigilance and allowed people to remove the traps. Initially, some had trouble sleeping because of this, staying awake until dawn. However, after waiting for a few more days without any incidents, they finally let go of their worries.
