"Huh?! What do you mean you can't grant me any funds? I'm a high ranked hunter who lost his money, isn't the guild supposed to help in these situations?!" The man asked.
The short girl beside him was watching quietly with a somewhat disappointed look.
It was an unusual pair.
A dirty blonde haired man who looked to be in his early twenties with a trimmed beard, a worn out black armoured outfit.
His build was tall and muscular and on his back he carried a large two handed long sword almost the same length as the short girl beside him.
She looked to be around 160 centimers, her long light brown hair was tied up in pig tails as she gazed up at him with her emerald-like eyes.
She wore blue short jeans with a plain white shirt, a casual outfit. Unlike him she didn't seem to carry any weapons either.
'Truly a weird pair…' Julius thought to himself as he walked past them and stopped in front of the next available secretary. 'Better to not get involved with them and use them to stay on the sidelines...'
" …How may I help you?" The secretary asked, looking Julius up and down with a cold faint smile.
It was a dark brown haired girl with black eyes and glasses. She wore a black suit, same as the other secretaries.
"I came here to get my level checked, and become a hunter." Julius responded as he returned a smile.
"DIdn't you come here a while ago to get your level checked? I'm sure you remember the result being level zero. Trying to survive as a hunter with that is basically suic-"
"I'm aware of my level, even still I wish to become a hunter. I'd also like to perform another level check." Said Julius, his smile still present.
"...I don't think you understand. Levels mean everything in this line of work. They're determined by your ability potential, mastery and overall physical prowess. Even level 1s, die the moment they step onto a field, what can a level zero-"
"Um… can you just drop it?" Julius asked, still smiling, except it felt far colder than earlier.. "I'd like to get my level checked and become hunter."
The secretary placed her palm on her face and let out a sigh.
"Alright, follow me."
Leaving her desk, she got up walked to the back of the Hunter's orgnanisation before entering into the room.
Julius was already aware of the procedure so he followed after her.
"Come on! Cut me some slack! How am I supposed to find a place to sleep at this rate!?" A loud voice echoed in the background.
Julius turned to the source, only for his eyes to narrow. It was the same man from the unusual duo. He was still arguing with the secretary.
The one to step up to him was a taller and larger bulkier man. He was bald and carried a large assault rifle on his back.
"Hey! Step outside, you're starting to piss me off."
But upon seeing him, the dirty blonde haired man grin.
"Hey, you got any money?" The dirty blonde asked.
Julius turned his head away and walked through to the room where the secretary was waiting.
'Looks like a fight is about to develop, not like it's any of my business.'
-
After stepping through the door, Julius was greeted by a small room. Inside of it, was an old mechanical machine with a hole large enough to fit a person's arm.
On the side of the machine was a single digit numerical measure.
"I'm sure you're aware how to use this, right?" She asked, smirking.
Of course he did, it was the same machine that he had used last time.
Ignoring her comment, Julius walked up to the machine and placed his hand into it.
"Levels range from zero to ten, so why does this machine only have display only a single digit?" Julius asked.
"It's an outdated model, It can only go up to level seven at max. Besides, it only measures your potential and mastery. Your awakeners level will also take into account your physical prowess which will be the next tests."
She glared at him coldly.
"Any other questions?"
"Yeah, why are you being such a bitch towards me?" Julius asked, his smile still present.
As far as he could recall, she wasn't like this last time he visited. She was far more quiet.
"Cause people like you disgust me. You don't know your place." She responded, showing him the middle finger.
"Right back at you." Julius responded with a bright smile as he returned a middle finger with his left hand.
"Just pour your energy into the machine. You can manage that much at least, can't you?" She asked, visibly shaken.
With that being said, the machine began to glow as he poured his energy into it. The gears inside quickly turned as it shone a dark light.
[Energy: 100% -> 98% -> 96%]
Julius frowned at how fast it was consuming his energy, but he held it in. It wasn't as if his stamina was high in this first place.
-
The process took 30 seconds to finish, Julius felt tired by the time it was over.
'I should start levelling up my stats… mainly my stamina.'
Julius's eyes flickered over to the girl who stared at his results with a grin.
"See? What'd I tell you? Level 0."
Julius pulled his arm out of the machine and walked to her side before frowning.
[LV 0]
'That can't be right…' He thought to himself, his eyes twitching. 'Even if it can't measure NIghtmare's potential, It measures mastery, right? I can control Nightmare unlike before… it doesn't make sense for it to be level zero…'
"Surprised? Did you think your results would have changed from last time? If so you're dumber than I expected. A person's potential is decided from birth, unless they have the resources, that won't change."
Her glare which was being directed at Julius slowly shifted towards herself as she stared at the end of the room.
"And with no potential, it doesn't matter how much you master your ability, if the machine won't acknowledge it, then it must be insanely weak even when mastered… sure there are resources which can increase an abilities potential."
She clenched her hands into a fist and grit her teeth.
"But people like us living in this shitty hell hole could never afford it. We can only focus on mastering our weak abilities and die in battle. That's how it's always been. You should look for another line of work, I'm tired of kids like you die."
For the first time, Julius's smile had faded.
'So she's being a bitch because she's tired of seeing hunters being killed? Hm..'
'She also mentioned something interesting… there are ways to increase an ability's potential… Is it the same as levelling up Nightmare or is it different? When i level up Nightmare does it increase it's mastery or potential?.'
"Don't worry about me, I can't die, even If I want to. Let's go to the next test."
The girl let out a sigh before guiding him to the next room.
-
Julius frowned as in the next room, he was greeted by a punching machine.
On the side of the machine was a measure, just like before however this one was two digits big.
"Physical prowess first test, strength huh…"
"Yep, just like last time. Punch it with all your strength and it'll measure it here. You're not allowed to strengthen yourself with your ability… not like your weak ability could do it anyway."
Julius frowned.
'She's starting to piss me off.'
He cocked his arm back and then swung it forward with all his strength.
*Thud!*
He punched the machine and the numbers on the side slowly rose up.
'What's the result!?' Julius's eyes flickered to the secretary.
