Even with the blizzard blocked off and the undying flames creating a warm, fiery path through the snow, except for Ruby, they were barely managing through the cold temperatures.
It was only after five minutes of walking, that they had encountered their first group of monsters.
Just as before, there were Ice Trolls, but the moon above their heads was already half full.
Meaning not only the curse effect of sleep deprivation but also blindness was applied, making them easy targets.
The undying flames prevented every single Ice Troll from getting through to the group.
This annoyed Julius as he would've preferred to farm some experience points and level up before advancing into a more dangerous area.
But that time never came, since after another minute of walking, they noticed it-
The sky above them had parted, one part was abyssal black with the moon hanging over it, representing Julius' domain, and the other was snowy white which represented that outside.
"So this is what marks the edge of my domain… Well at least now I know its range. Around 800 metres give or take."
"So what'll we do now?" Lyra asked. "Will you create another domain to stop the blizzard?"
Julius glanced at his energy tab.
[Energy: 72% -> 71%]
'Keeping it active for five minutes took almost a third of my energy reserve… I don't know how much longer we'll have to walk so for now, it's better not to waste energy needlessly.'
Julius glanced at Ruby who had been quietly waiting for him to make a decision, she seemed to be in a good mood.
"Can you bring the Undying flames closer? We'll have to walk through the blizzard. I won't be creating another domain."
Ruby nodded and snapped her fingers. A split second after, dark ominous flames erupted in their direction.
The flames stopped just 20 meters ahead of them, causing a strong burning heat to reach their bodies.
'To think Ruby stood right in front of it…' Julius thought to himself as he clenched his hands into a fist.
He gave another glance at her before taking a step out of his domain.
"Let's go." He said.
With that one step, he left his domain, and marched forward, the others following after him.
The Undying flames too walked forward, maintaining an exact distance of 20 metres as instructed.
-
In the middle of the blizzard, they walked through the burning woods, following the dark light in front of them.
The snow was limiting their sight, even with all the heat they still felt cold, but that didn't stop them as they continued marching forward.
Although Julius felt more vulnerable without his domain active, it didn't stop him. On the path, they encountered a few more monsters, but the Undying Flame quickly dealt with them
Half an hour had gone in the blink of an eye, and before they had even realised it, they had reached the end of the forest.
A large old gate stood at the end of their path, cutting off the woods and snow.
Despite the gate being shut, they knew they were at the right place since it had the same patterns as the one they came from.
"The second boss room… we've made it." Julius muttered.
Upon seeing this, Ruby snapped her fingers, causing the Undying Flames to compress into a ball of flames before returning to her shadow.
She made sure that it was done fast, so that that none of them could get burnt. Although this wasn't possible when arising it, it was returning it.
The group was once again greeted by freezing cold when the undying flames had gone out. They hurried to the gates, with Julius quickly placing his hands on its ice cold frame.
Julius pushed on the giant gates, forcing them to open with strength.
A large hallway greeted them once the gates were opened. It had no windows, only numerous ceiling lanterns and a red carpet leading to another gate.
After entering it, the large gate behind them slowly shut.
*Thud!*
"It's too late to turn back, huh…" Julius yawned as he walked ahead of the group.
"Wait." Said Lyra, as she grabbed Julius's shoulder. "Julius, and Ruby, it's your first time in a Labyrinth, I have to ask, have either of you ever gotten your awakeners levels measured?"
Awakener levels were used to classify one's strength in this post-apocalyptic world. An awakaner's level determined just how powerful an awakener was.
Levels were determined by an awakener's ability potential, mastery over their abilities and overall physical prowess.
The easiest way to get it measured, would be at the hunter's guild where they could perform a systematic scan.
"Level? What's that?" Ruby asked.
Her response was understandable. She was a princess from another world, they most likely used a different term there.
"It's a measure of one's strength. Last time I got mine measured it was zero." Julius responded.
Lyra's brows raised up in surprise.
"How is that even possible?"
"They couldn't gauge Nightmare's Level, and I couldn't control it either, on top of that you better than anyone know how physically weak I am."
Lyra let out a sigh.
"The monsters we've encountered so far were mid-ranked… Chances are, this boss is going to be at least high-ranked."
In this world, monsters were given five categories. Low-rank, mid-rank, high-rank, demon-rank and extinction rank.
To deal with a single high-rank monster, one would need a group of high-level awakeners.
"No matter what happens, keep your guards up."
Julius stared at the gate.
"Don't worry, my guard has been up. I've been getting an ominous vibe from the moment I stepped in here."
Julius glanced at Ruby who walked silently beside him.
"How many drops of that elixir do you have left?" Julius asked as he glanced at Ruby.
"Running short, probably five more drops, six if we're lucky." Ruby responded as she pulled out the bottle from her pouch.
"Just six, huh…"
'We'll have to avoid getting injured at all costs.'
"Stick to the formation. Me and Ruby at the front, while you stay at the rear with Lyra." Said Julius as they reached the end of the hallway.
Just as he was about to stretch his arm out to open the door, it opened on its own.
The other side had a large dark palace chamber with a glass dome. Through the glass roof, they could see the snowy white sky.
Once they stepped into the chamber, however, large wall mounted torches arranged in a line began to light up one by one, slowly moving towards the centre.
At the centre, stood two figures. The three's eyes naturally fell on them, unable to look away.
A humanoid figure with its body fully clad in armour. Through its small gaps, it's decaying body and rotten flesh along with pinpoints of lights in place of its eyes.
It held a long sword and was mounted on top of a large white furred horse. The horse's eyes glowed a blue light and the air around it was so cold that it was visible.
"That's… an undead..." Declared Ruby, as she narrowed her eyes.
"It's not just any undead… It's a high-ranked one." Lyra declared, nervously.
