Alexa just smiled and stared at her mother's beautiful face. Though she was pale and thin, she was still pretty as ever.

Then her mother asked, "Lexa, where did you get money to pay for the medical bills?"

Alexa was momentarily stunned. She still had more money to make to settle the finances; she was starting to make progress in her night job. However, the night she didn't get paid was when she slapped a client out of anger.

"I've been working hard, Mom. Don't worry about it," she replied with a reassuring smile, trying to hide the struggles she faced, "And besides, my friends help me raise money," she stuttered and couldn't directly look into her mother's eyes since she was lying. She makes her voice more jolly to make her mother believe her.

How could her friends help her when she doesn't have any friends? Although she knew that her mother knew she was lying, she hoped her mother would buy it.
