It was pouring outside. The sky was obscured by dark clouds, making the day appear to be night. The city's neon lights descended from the sky for hundreds of miles, lighting up the clouds and turning darkness into day.
Cassie's high heels landed crisply on the marble floor of the hospital's wide corridor. She wore her medical robe and tied her black hair behind her head. The stethoscope around her neck radiated a cold, metallic gleam.
"Doctor Morgan, all three operations are scheduled for the afternoon, and there will be an academic exchange at 6 PM..." A nurse followed closely behind her, carefully explaining the day's itinerary.
"Doctor, the emergency department just sent a patient over; she bled a lot, so you should go take a look right away," said the young nurse as she ran in.
"Yes." Cassie nodded and quickly walked toward the emergency room.
Lying on the bed was a pale-faced woman with disheveled hair. She was crying out in pain.
The man's bespoke suit, designed to fit him, was crumpled and brilliant crimson, with no indication of embarrassment. He maintained a cool and composed demeanor. His face outline was as sharp as a knife's edge. His thin lips were pursed, and his face was apathetic to the point of being chilly.
Cassie hurried over, but when she clearly saw the man's face, she was instantly stunned on the spot, her face turning deathly pale. At this time, the man was also looking at her. After a brief moment of shock, a faint smile appeared in her eyes.
It seemed unfortunate that she was working in this hospital and crossed paths with him.
Cassie quickly shifted her gaze and looked at the patient on the bed. When she lifted the corner of the blanket, she saw that the woman's lower body was covered in blood, and her skirt was dyed a bright red.
"The child can no longer be preserved. Prepare for the operation," Cassie said to the nurse. Even she couldn't help but admire her calmness at this moment.
The nurse handed the confirmation of the operation over to the man. He received it and quickly signed the name 'Theodore Smith' with the golden pen in his hands.
The operation went on for more than two hours, and the child was drained before she could get to the hospital. All Cassie could do was clean the womb and minimize the damage.
After finishing, she walked out of the operating room. She took off her mask and threw it into the treatment box along with her blue surgical gown. She stood there washing her hands when a deep, magnetic male voice suddenly came from behind her. It was a charming voice but mixed with a hint of coldness.
"Aren't you going to ask me?"
She did not turn her head back because she knew who it was.
She washed her hands, dried them under the sterilizer, and turned slowly.
Theo was standing at the door; his tall and straight posture was mostly covered in shadows, his slender fingers were holding onto the cigarette butt, and he was casually exhaling smoke. His handsome face was hidden behind the fog, and the feeling was so hazy that it was almost unreal.
Damn, how could he smoke inside the hospital premises?
Cassie knew that Theo was one of the board of directors, but smoking inside was prohibited!
"What about you? Aren't you gonna explain?" Cassie met his deep gaze, easy to be indifferent, and her tone was surprisingly calm. However, the hand hiding behind her back was trembling uncontrollably.
However, he didn't. His cold silence completely disappointed her.
Is she the one Moretti was talking about? Theo's fiance? Theo just confessed the other day about his love for her, and now she's seeing him with another girl? And when worst comes to worst, the woman gets a miscarriage!
It was a slap to her face. How can he even do that?
Is this her punishment because they moved out?
"He's one of my employees." She thought he would not explain it.
Cassie smiled. "Don't worry. I won't mind."
Theo moved closer to her. "I don't need to explain myself, right? You did everything you wanted. You left me even if I asked you to stay and trust me."
Cassie pressed her lips when their eyes met. She could feel the sadness in his voice, but things between them were complicated.
"This is for my safety—"
"Dammit!" Theo cut the hum of her words. "I told you to trust me! Why can't you even do that? Is loving you not enough for you to stay and trust me? Your father—"
"My father was transferred to one of the private rooms here. You don't have to worry about him. For the company… maybe I will need some time to—"
"You hid from me for two years. I gave you that. But I can't wait for days or months. I will fucking marry you whether you like it or not…" he paused when Cassie dragged him away.
Theo frowned but let her, and they stopped when they reached her office. "Let's talk inside," she uttered, gritting her teeth.
Cassie doesn't want others to hear Theo's tantrums.
"Can't you understand and respect my decision? And what are you talking about? Marriage?" Cassie scoffed. "Are you insane? You are engaged—"
"I am not," Theo asserted, making Cassie clenched her right fist.
"Still, we can't—"
"Give me a week. I will fucking do any means to make you mine. I will walk you in the aisle—" Blake promised to set him free once he did his last favor. All Theo needs to do is to ensure that he will wrap everything.
He can't wait to claim Cassie again. He wants her to be his wife.
Kurt was right; he fell once again and won't deny that anymore.
"Don't rush things, Theo. I am getting scared."
Theo attempted to reach for her, but she moved a few steps away from him.
"You just need to trust me."
Should she trust him? Is she ready to get married? Aren't things a little bit rush?
