Mason King took the basket with one hand and pressed down on Granny's hand that was trying to give money back with the other. He whispered something to her, and Granny teared up as she looked at him, still hesitant and unsure whether to accept the basket. Without saying anything more, Mason handed the basket to another staff member nearby and turned back to walk toward Suzanne Trent.
Only then did Suzanne approach him and ask softly, "What did you say to her?"
Mason wrapped his arm around Suzanne, leading her away without looking back at Granny, who wanted to give the money back.
It wasn't until they were back near the bus that he said, "Nothing much, just asked her a few questions about her son."
Suzanne was surprised, thinking that Mason, who never meddled in others' affairs, not only bought her the pears but also chatted with Granny for a while.
"Has her son never returned?" she asked.
