When night fell, the shadow would disappear for a while and she could smile and laugh like there wasn’t a single burden weighing her down. However, just as surely as sunset and nightfall, the sun would rise the following morning and then that shadow of darkness that haunted her would be back.

If I had known that the love marks that I left on her skin would trigger those memories within her, I would have held back my selfish desires. I glanced over at Dahlia who was taking a nap in her seat next to me on our return flight. She must have felt tired because it didn’t take long for her to fall asleep.
