"Big sister, I brought you food. Hurry up and eat." At this moment, Ye Qingfeng walked to the central room with a bowl of soup, a piece of cornbread, and an egg. He placed them on the table and shouted.
"Yes, I'm here," Ye Qingyu replied and said goodbye to her grandfather. She went out of the inner room to eat.
When Ye Qingyu saw the thick soup in the bowl and the egg, her heart ached and warmed. These were probably the best things they had in the house and they had been left for her.
"Qingfeng, have you eaten?" Ye Qingyu sat down, cracked the egg, and peeled it. Immediately, the fragrance of the egg entered her nose.
"I ate long ago." Ye Qingfeng smelled the egg fragrance and swallowed his saliva. He quickly looked away. "Big sister, I haven't fed the pigs yet. I'll go out first."
"Qingfeng, wait. Let's share this egg among me, you, and Grandpa."
Ye Qingyu separated the egg white and yolk and ate a little of the egg white herself. Then, she left the most nutritious yolk for her brother and grandfather.
"Hurry up, I've finished my portion. This is for you. Send the other half to our grandpa and give him some water. Make sure he doesn't choke on it."
Ye Qingyu knew that if she did not eat a little, Ye Qingfeng would definitely not eat it. Even so, she had to put on a tough attitude and make him eat.
"Big sister, finish it all. You're sick. You need to nourish yourself. I'm not eating!"
Although Ye Qingfeng smelled the fragrance of the egg and really wanted to eat it, he was very sensible. His grandmother and parents had instructed him that this egg was to nourish his big sister's body. He could not eat it.
"You're not listening to your big sister?! I told you to eat, so take it." Ye Qingyu's face darkened, and Ye Qingfeng was instantly frightened. He took it and took a bite.
"I'll send it to Grandpa."
Ye Qingyu nodded. Not long after, she heard her grandpa and Qingfeng trying to make each other eat it. Qingfeng persuaded him for a long time before finally making their grandfather eat the egg.
It was just an egg, but her family treated it as a treasure. They gave it to each other and could not bear to eat it. This made Ye Qingyu's heart warm but also ache.
However, there was even more anxiety in her heart.
She had to quickly think of a way to earn money. She had to at least let her family fill their stomachs first!
She soaked the hard cornbread in the bowl of soup. When it became soft, Ye Qingyu swallowed it whole. Of course, it tasted terrible, but she did not have a choice. If she did not eat, she would starve to death.
Moreover, this was the best food the family had. The cornbread her parents ate was not made of flour like hers. It was made of coarse chaff and scratched their throats when they swallowed it.
After breakfast, Ye Qingfeng cleaned up the dishes before her and said sensibly, "Big sister, go back to bed and lie down. Don't tire yourself out. I'll wash the dishes."
"My body will get weaker and weaker the more I lie down. I have to move around appropriately so that I can recover faster," Ye Qingyu said seriously. She left the central room and walked around the courtyard.
Although Ye Qingfeng felt that this was different from what he knew in the past, he still nodded.
Before his big sister was disfigured, apart from his big brother, her big sister was the most educated in the family. If she said so, it must be true.
"Qingfeng, did Grandma, Father, Mother, and Second Uncle go to the fields?" Ye Qingyu asked.
"No, they went to town," Ye Qingfeng answered as he washed the dishes.
"Father and Second Uncle should still be working at the grain shop. Today, a rich family in town is getting married. Grandma and Mother will help wash the dishes and clean up there. They might be able to earn five to six copper coins today!
If it weren't for the fact that I'm still young, I would have followed them too. But if I did, there would be no one to take care of you and Grandpa. I could only stay at home."
