"I’M NOT sure how it works in New York, but that’s not how we do things around here, Jerome," Detective Anderson said, and then he actually scoffed. Like he found my request unreasonable or something.

"I don’t see what the problem is. It’s for her safety." I’d always been a great debater. All the Kensingtons were. Yet, I couldn’t make the detective see any of my finer points. He was stubborn, which was beginning to annoy me.

He grazed the door where Lily passed by us a few minutes earlier. "Lily is an adult. I cannot force her to move in with you. At a minimum, you would need the court to order her incompetent, and I highly doubt you want to unleash the hell that would bring."

I considered his point. "No, but how else can I keep her safe?" Moving in with me made the most sense. I’d take her safety seriously.
