Marion Canyon.
Situated south of Glocken City, Marion Canyon was once a popular spot for players to lay ambushes, taking advantage of its terrain to wait for their prey to enter and then strike, earning their desired rewards.
However, after it became known as the "Land of Death," the canyon was completely abandoned.
Players preferred to take detours rather than pass through it, and even if they did lay ambushes, no prey would come by. As a result, no one would hunt there, and the area remained almost deserted for half a year—truly desolate.
Yet today, Marion Canyon is receiving a large group of ambushers.
Members of Dyne's squad, hiding on a cliffside, are complaining.
"I can't believe there are so many people here laying ambushes."
"Those informants are just despicable."
"Selling the same information to so many people—surely they made a fortune off this?"
"This is so frustrating."
The players, armed with guns and crouching behind rocks to conceal their positions, whisper angrily to each other.
Shinon, crouching behind a rock, listens to her teammates' repeated complaints while opening the hood on her sniper rifle's scope and adjusting the rifle, scanning the canyon from all sides.
To her surprise, there are armed players everywhere on the cliffside, some hiding with guns, while others are observing the pathways below with tactical binoculars. There must be over fifty people gathered in the area.
Among them are some very famous players.
"BoB Second Tournament, 27th place—'Latin.'"
"BoB Second Tournament, 24th place—'CAC.'"
"BoB Second Tournament, 19th place—'Flame.'"
"BoB Second Tournament, 13th place—'Big Wind.'"
These players are all here, recognized by Shinon.
Additionally, players who ranked in the first BoB tournament are also appearing in the canyon, all choosing to ambush here.
It's obvious why they're here.
The atmosphere in Marion Canyon becomes tense.
It's not because of the number of players laying ambushes; it's because no one expected to run into other ambushers. Everyone is shocked, which makes the tension in the canyon even thicker.
The informants who learned Rozen's whereabouts didn't just sell the information to Dyne; they sold it to various players, all making a tidy profit. But the players who bought the information didn't realize the situation. The moment they all came together, the mood soured, which led to the heightened tension.
Everyone here assumes the others are after the same prey, creating an atmosphere of hostility, which anyone can easily sense.
If it weren't for the fear of sparking an unnecessary battle, these players might have already started fighting each other.
In this kind of situation, it's impossible for the atmosphere not to be tense.
Even Shinon feels the urge to immediately pull the trigger and take out every player, one by one.
But Shinon isn't driven by anger—it's excitement.
For someone like Shinon, who craves combat with strong opponents, encountering so many formidable players in the wild is an exhilarating opportunity.
(If I could take them all out...)
That would make me stronger. Really strong.
Thinking of this, Shinon feels a surge of excitement and nearly pulls the trigger several times.
However, she knows that if she fires now, it would trigger an all-out battle, turning the place into a hellish battleground filled with gunfire and chaos.
And she knows she'd be the first to be targeted.
After thinking this through, Shinon holds herself back and doesn't act rashly.
But compared to before, she feels increasingly restless.
Normally, she would have hidden her emotions, calmed herself down, and focused on sniping. For a sniper, the biggest enemy is emotion—if feelings are unsettled, the aim becomes shaky, which is very problematic.
Under normal circumstances, Shinon would silently adjust her mindset and focus on her task, without commenting on anything.
But now, she's clearly growing impatient.
"Where's Dyne? What's the next instruction?"
Shinon asks one of her teammates.
The teammate responds immediately.
"Dyne went to negotiate."
"After all, there's only one prey."
"We can't all fire at once when the prey shows up, right?"
"If we all start fighting over it, it wouldn't benefit anyone. He went to talk things over."
The team members answer like this, and Shinon nods before falling silent again.
While it's regrettable that she can't engage with the surrounding strong players, Shinon also doesn't want to let Rozen, the prey, slip away. She can only wait and see how things unfold.
"I hope they can come to an agreement before he shows up."
Shinon thinks, not holding out too much hope.
She understands that dealing with interests is the most troublesome situation.
If this were another game, there would be plenty of solutions. But in GGO, giving up the prey is almost impossible.
No one is willing to give up a chance to make a fortune. With the game's currency exchange system, many players can't avoid the temptation of a big reward. On top of that, with Rozen's current fame, capturing him would instantly make any player a celebrity in GGO, which is enticing for those seeking recognition.
Realizing this, it makes sense that so many players are ambushing here.
(Normally, no one would dare to provoke such powerful enemies without a clear chance of victory.)
But this time, with the advantage of the "Land of Death," even cautious players like Dyne couldn't resist gathering others to set up an ambush. It's clear that the informants knew this and made a fortune off the situation.
While Shinon is thinking this, Dyne finally returns.
"Ugh, what a troublesome situation."
Dyne sighs as he plops down in front of everyone, looking frustrated.
The others gather around him.
"How'd it go?"
"Did you come to a decision?"
They all ask.
Shinon also looks toward Dyne.
Seeing the group looking at him, Dyne doesn't hide anything. After a deep sigh, he explains the outcome of the negotiation.
"We talked. No one is willing to back down. Everyone wants to keep their ambush. Not even a coin toss was agreed upon."
This outcome is what Shinon expected.
So what was the final decision?
"Simple. We agreed not to interfere with each other. The first shot will be fired by each squad's sniper. No one can act prematurely. If the sniper succeeds, the loot goes to the team with the successful shot. If the shot fails, we'll all focus fire, and the team that lands the final blow gets the loot."
Dyne looks at Shinon after saying this.
"So, it's up to you now, Shinon."
"If you can make the first shot and succeed before anyone else, it'll be our victory."
"If not, we'll have to see how it goes."
Dyne's words make Shinon lift her gaze.
In her eyes, the fire of battle burns brightly.
