I set my phone down on the coffee table, not taking my eyes off the black roses. I mean, it would have been funny had he been teasing me. But he wasn’t teasing, and I knew that. Sitting in front of me were the roses I’d gotten, and they seemed to mock me.

I didn’t know who sent them.

Was it wrong to assume that maybe Royce had been lying about the roses? I didn’t peg him as a liar or someone who wanted to mess with me. That didn’t fit the description of the man I was getting to know.

I grabbed the vase, and though I knew it was dumb, I checked each flower carefully. I didn’t know what would appear or what I might find, but I didn’t have another idea. Obviously, there wasn’t anything in the flowers. So, I picked up the card with the three little words and nothing else. ‘I Miss You.’
