"Any idea where we're actually going, Mill?" Lua called out to Mill but got no response. "Hey, Mill? You there? Eidron to wherever it is that your brain's taken you to. Are you just ignoring me because if you are then I'm going to beat the shit out of you." She continued to try to get his attention but there was not even an attempt of a response from the boy. He was really lost in thought. "Just leave 'em alone for now. He's clearly shaken after what just happened. It was his call leaving her out there like that." Lua turned to Myst. "Well he needs to hurry up and get over it. I don't want my only source of conversation to be you. You annoy me significantly more than he does."
One of Myst's eyes twitched slightly at that comment and took the hint to not try to talk to the girl. Mill continued to move in front completely in his own head. 'Why did I make such a stupid choice of leaving a kid like her behind while there were monsters running around the town. It would have been safer to bring her with us right? No, but then they would have flooded the cave and we would be in an even worse position that now. Though I can't really see how much worse this could get.' This was the first time in his life that Mill was placed in the lead of any sort of situation and now he was starting to think that things like this happening could be why. 'We have to find a different way out of this Mine so that we can save her. There has to be at least one different exit or maybe a side tunnel somewhere that leads to a different cave?'
Mill was completely relying on luck at this point as well a his minimum knowledge on Mines. This was their only hope. He might have been able to break through the rubble but that could have caused the cave fall apart and crush them from the force so he didn't want to risk it. The group continued to rush through the Mine in silence, not even attempting conversation at this point. After a while it was starting to seem hopeless and Lua couldn't hold it in any longer.
"GOD WHAT ARE WE EVEN LOOKING FOR!" This sudden outburst startled both Myst and even Mill. "We've been running for who knows how long and haven't even seen a small cavern let alone a second exit! We should just go back and break through the rubble at this point!" Lua awaited a response and one surprisingly came from Mill. " At this point we've been running for too long. Going back is no longer a viable option. And breaking the rubble could lead to more harm than good so it's best that we not try to risk it." Mill nodded to himself affirming his own point of view.
"Well since it seems like you're finally ready to speak would you mind tell us where it is that we're going. I mean seriously. Running for what's felt like hours at this point with no clear purpose is more useless that going back the way we came." Mill paused at Lua's inquiry. "Well that's...I don't know." This was the only response that Mill had as he truly didn't know why he ran deeper into the cave. He just did without any further thought.
"Did you say that you don't know? That's right. I almost forgot that I'm surrounded by idiots including my so called leader." Lua said mockingly. "Didn't we already go through this! I didn't ask for this shit so can you stop acting like I did." This retort was sudden as Mill shot his gaze towards Lua. Mill didn't know where it had come from. It was like something inside of him had broke open and release all of his pent up frustration ."Everyone for some odd reason thought that it was a bright idea to put me up for the leader position when quite honestly I'm the one that's least suited for this shitty role. So I'm sorry if your standards for how your leader should be don't line up with me. But you should remember that it was you who put me in this position in the first place! So whose this real idiot here. Dumbass."
.....
Silence. A heavy and awkward silence lay within the air between the two teenagers. Lua was at a loss. She had just been being as she usually had been by saying the words that were on her mind. Those word tended to be hurtful but it had never been her intention to hurt anybody with them. This reaction, however, showed her that her words had done just that somehow. But...why?
Why had he had such a visceral reaction to Lua's words. He knew that she was joking like always but that didn't stop him from lashing out. Mill stood still staring at Lua with shock apparent on his face. He suddenly shook his head to clear out his thoughts on the situation. "Let's keep moving. I remember seeing an old map a while ago that showed a separate path out of this Mine. I'll lead the way from now on." Myst walked in front of the boy and girl and grabbed Mill by the arm. "We should have a conversation on the way there." Mill glanced into the eyes of the instructor before nodding meekly.
Myst looked to Lua seemingly asking if she was okay to move. She looked at Myst still slightly in shock but confirmed that she was ready with a slight nod. The instructor sighed as he and Mill took the lead while going deeper into the Mine. "This is why I hate dealing with children."
...
All of the mining had been put on halt as the crash rang throughout the cavern. Karl and Darren glance at each other to confirm that they had truly heard the explosion. "Well that can't be good." Luckily for them the other miners started moving towards the sound making it easier for them to blend in. Karl leaned over to Darren and whispered, "What do you think caused it? The noise I mean." Darren thought to himself before responding.
"It could be that Mill and Lua came to find us. Or maybe just some random mining accident."
"Well let us hope that it is not Mill and Lua or else our cover will be totally blown. Right, Cameron." Karl cautioned but Darren felt the need to correct his friend.
"Wait, you're Cameron. I'm Ryder." Darren corrected his friend which Karl didn't take too kindly to. "No, I am Ryder Whistly and you are Cameron McHall." Darren was now looking at his friend in complete disbelief. "It's Ryder McHall and Cameron Whistly. Of which you are Cameron and I am Ryder. How did you already forget this!" Karl was now immensely confused.
"Are you sure? I swear that I had given myself the name Ryder." Darren now finally understood. This must be how Lua and Mill feel when we're around. " Listen up idiot. We have to keep these fake names up so just try to remember that you are Cameron Whistly and I am your partner Ryder McHall. If you slip up in front of people it'll be our asses served up on a platter for those weird body snatchers. Or I guess in this case our brains?" Karl nodded.
"I understand. So, you are Ryder McNaulty and I am Cameron Whisker. It all makes perfect sense now." Darren looked at his idiotic friend and sighed. At least he had gotten the first names correct. "Sure man let's go with that for now. Oh we're here." Darren pointed to the front as he could now see where the crash had come from. It was a boy close to around their age currently in a crater within the wall staring defiantly at an older woman that they assumed was one of the body snatchers.
"Your misconduct is getting rather annoying boy. Tis at thou's best interest to fall in line else we shall grant further punishment. Unless you wish to end up just like that pitiful woman that you call your mother." The boy's eyes only became more vicious as he the creature spoke. "Don't you dare talk about my mother!" The boy leaped out of the crater to attempt to hit the creature but it was a fruitless effort as it easily caught his fist before being flung back into the wall only more violently than before as heard by the even louder crash.
"That Xeno's at it again."
"He never gives up. Especially after what happened to his mother." Karl and Darren watched the scene play out until the older woman simply sighed and turned to leave. "Thou art truly a worthless being, Xeno. Miner's get back to work this instant lest thou wish to be place into a crater beside the boy." With those words the Miners separated and returned to working. All except the Xeno, Karl, and Darren. As he was pulling himself out of the hole in the wall Xeno was suddenly greeted by a hand offering to help him out.
Xeno looked at the owner of the hand in confusion as he had never seen them before. He remembered most people from the village as it was relatively small population wise but these two people were new. So he couldn't help but ask.
"Who are you?" A small smile showed on the lips of the half orc in front of the boy as he replied.
"Nice to meet you. We're the ASPA."
