Silence
Not a single person spoke after Mill's results were announced. No, not that they didn't speak. They were so shocked that they simply couldn't speak. I mean what exactly would they say.
For the first time in the history of the Heroite a person didn't have a known bloodline. It was even more surprising that Mill was the one without it. Everyone knew how amazing his sister was, but now they have been hit with this great shock.
Of course, no one was more shocked than the man himself. Mill had still not removed his hand from the device so the machine continued.
No bloodline recognized. Blood purity 100%. Ability: Unknown. Type: N/A
When the machine finished speaking Dr. Kabon voiced to no one in particular, "What an interesting situation."
"Well, that's that you can leave now." Dr. Kabon said as she pulled Mill's arm away from the device.
"What? No, wait. There must be some sort of mistake, right? There has never been such a thing as an not having a bloodline." Mill reached for Dr. Kabon's arm but was stopped by Mr. Wiol.
"It's okay, Mill. This doesn't mean anything." Mill looked at Mr. Wiol's face and saw a look of understanding- no. Pity. It was pity. Mill looked around at the crowd and saw Nova and Jenny having just entered the room.
They looked so ridiculing? Why? Why are they making fun of me? Did they know this would happen? Is that why they wanted him to him to come here? So that he could be embarrassed in front of a crowd of people?
The rest of the crowd began to whisper amongst themselves, but that didn't stop Mill from hearing them.
"No bloodline? I guess he wasn't really all that special."
"We had to wait here for someone without a bloodline? What big waste of time."
"Without a bloodline he won't be able to beat people with even basic abilities in the long run. I guess that makes Mill useless."
"Why did he even show up in the first place? He just wasted our time."
The crowd's words felt like they were going directly into Mill's brain. Useless? Not needed? Why were they saying these things?
People he used to call his friends were showing their true colors all because he didn't have a bloodline. Even the family that raised him.
"I-I c-can't..." Mill muttered.
"Are you alright young man?" Dr. Kabon asked. "If you have time I'd like to speak to you about your results." Dr. Kabon grabbed Mill's arm only to have her hand immediately swatted away by the boy.
"I can't handle this. I-I n-need..." Mill frantically looked around the room until his eyes focused on the exit.
...Run
Mill took off from the stage and ran out of the auditorium. Why am I here? Why did I think that I was special? This is so embarrassing. I made a fool of myself and now look at where I am.
Mill ran and ran, but it felt as though he was making no progress. Was the hallway always this long? The walls started twisting and turning while laughs of ridicule and contempt flooded his brain. Suddenly, light blinded Mill. He didn't know when or how but he had made it out of the maze of his school.
He seemed to be in the abandoned district of the city. There was another name for the district though, "Castle of the Lost". It's the perfect place for people that wish to hide from the hustle and bustle of the normal city life. "When did I get here? No, that doesn't matter now. After, running out like that I should probably stay here for the night."
After finding a room that he could get into Mill just sat on the floor and thought about what just happened. He had put his hand on the Line Reader and it said that he didn't have a special bloodline.
That, for some reason, sent him into a weird spiral of embarrassment and shame until he ended up running out of the school and into this building.
Why did I react like that? It's not like I can't be an adventurer without a special bloodline I would just have to work harder. And why was my bloodline not read? Do I really not have one? This doesn't make any since right now.
Mill was lost in thought for so long that by time he snapped out of it dark had begun and the Blaze was no longer in the sky. The sky was now illuminated by the mana leftover from the Blaze as there is no moon in this world.
Mill got up to go home when suddenly thought about the ridiculing gazes of his aunt and sister and decided to stay where he was. Though the building was quite run down the room he found was in quite good shape.
"There's even a perfectly good mattress here." The thought that someone might be living here suddenly came into Mill's mind, but then he immediately ignored it.
"If someone's living here they can tell me when I wake up." As Mill said that he went to lay down on the mattress. He started to wonder more about why his bloodline couldn't be read.
I have to have an ancestor he just isn't known for some reason. I just wish I could talk to him and find out why. As the thought of a conversation with a person that he had never met came to Mill's mind he sighed and closed his eyes and drifted to sleep.
After a while Mill's eyes opened revealing a strange blue room. Like a really blue room. The walls were blue. The windows were blue. Everything was just blue and it was really bizarre. The only thing not blue in the entire room was the man sitting at the blue table.
Mill slowly approached the man. The man looked to be around 34 agewise. He was average in terms of height and had shody, black hair that partially covered his eyes. As Mill got closer to the man he realized that didn't really stand out that much.
"Hey." Mill said in an attempt to get the mans attention, but saw no reaction in the man.
"Hey, I talking to you. At the table." Mill reiterated.
"Oh are you now? I didn't realize that the way you get someone's attention is just randomly screaming out hey. I should take this into consideration." The man turned to look at Mill with an unamused expression.
"Ok, I get it. Now, who are you?" Mill asked the man who then proceeded to give an exaggerated sigh in response.
"Now, you come into my home and ask me who I am?! I guess no one taught you proper manners." The man placed a hand on his head and slowly shook it.
"Look, I have no idea where I am. So I apologize for not having proper visitor's etiquette, but I need to know what's going on right now. So who are you?" Mill was getting annoyed by this man's casual attitude. He was acting like they were already supposed to know each other.
"Alright you angry cockatrice calm down. You're so busy worrying about my attitude and the words that I'm saying that you're not thinking logically." The man stood up and walked towards Mill.
"Now, you went to sleep and when you woke up you were here, in my home, without any idea of how you got here. You see me and I'm acting very familiar with you. What could that possibly mean, Mill?"
"How do you know my name?" Mill asked the man.
"Is this how it always goes? This is so annoying. Alright kid I'll tell you since you seem too stupid to find out otherwise." The man got right in front of Mill and lifted the hair that was covering his brilliant yellow eyes.
"My name is Pierce Hoodwagon. I'm your ancestor, Mill."
