96.55% Shapeshifter System / Chapter 28: First Payroll

章節 28: First Payroll

I awoke the next morning to a cacophony of groggy yawns and pained stretching. Joining in I groaned as I stretched my stiff muscles and slowly sat up blinking the sleep out of my surprise.

To my surprise the Sun was already high in the sky making the room bright causing some to shield their eyes and complain about the need for heavier curtains. Everyone was still exhausted so no one made any big breakfast, instead we finished off the remaining cereal in the house.

As we sat there eating the cereal a dark thought occurred to me.

'If technology doesn't work anymore that means all the factories are shut down. It also means no one is sending food to any grocery stores. People must've been surviving off of what they already had. People are going to start going hungry soon and hungry people are desperate people…and desperate people do crazy things.'

Kate ate her breakfast in silence instead of joining the chatter going on around her.

"Something wrong Kate?" I asked as I set my empty bowl down on the coffee table.

"Not wrong necessarily just different. You guys seem so relaxed about everything going on, especially compared to everyone else. I'm not sure if you all are crazy, good, bad, insanely well adjusted or what and it's a big difference to everyone out there."

The room fell silent and I nodded my head in response. I nodded my head in response understanding where she was coming from but unsure of how to respond, to me it was what it was the world had changed and the team worked together like always.

Thankfully Jenna stepped in. "I don't know if it's any of those honesty. We've been friends forever and have done everything as a group or a team since middle school. Then the world changed literally in an instant and when everything felt unnatural we just settled back to what was most natural to us."

Kate thought for a moment but seemed to accept that answer and nodded but stayed silent. Not wanting to let silence set in again I cleared my throat age asked-

"Well, who's ready to get to it?"

Receiving multiple nods I nodded to Jenna who retrieved the Ethereal Cores from their temporary storage area. We had a total of 1 Lvl 4, 2 Lvl 3, 7 Lvl 2, 37 Lvl 1, 6 Lvl 0 Ethereal Cores for a total of 53 cores.

Taking one Lvl 0 core and one Lvl 1 core I passed them to Kate. She looked at the remaining pile enviously but withheld any complaints as I had given her the agreed amount of cores.

"That is your agreed upon payment, however," I said turning to the group, "I believe you're entitled to an extra Lvl 1 core because of the unadvertised danger you were placed in forcing you to have to fight. Any objections?"

Seeing that there were none this left us with a total of 50 Ethereal cores after I handed Kate her additional core.

"We have some matters we need to discuss amongst ourselves this morning, however before you go, would you be interested in going back into the dungeon with us or taking other jobs from us in the future?" Jenna piped up.

"If you have no other jobs available then I'll go back to the dungeon, but like I said my system type isn't combat related so I'd rather make my way out here than in there. However, I need the strength to keep from being bullied so I'll do what I must."

Jenna nodded, "We'll be in touch."

Kate said goodbye and left shortly after allowing us to get into more of the finer details of the split, gains, experiences, and the way forward for us…and more.

"Before we split these up I have something to let you all know. I'm sure you already know but the cores we got the first time through were…off."

"What do you mean?" Asked Isabell.

"Well if everything levels at the same rate, and we can only absorb 10% of the Ethereal in the core, then didnt the last cores have to much in them? Based on the trend I've seen on my own levels that amount doubles every level up."

"So?" Asked Mick.

"So," said Ren, "Then if 0 to 1 is 25 then 1 to 2 is 50 and 2 to 3 is 100 making 3 to 4 200, etc. Everything but the Lvl 0s we got more than they should be even have in them."

"Unless you count the amount from all the levels before." Reminded Isabell.

Before anyone else could contribute to the theories and discussion suddenly a line of text appeared in my vision and by the looks on everyone's faces I could tell the same happened to them.

'Deeper questions lead to deeper understanding. When an individual levels up it consumes all of the Ethereal in their Ethereal Core to improve their bodies. Some species like yours are able to direct the way their body develops so they get what you understand to be Status Points while others are assigned automatically as they develop. Therefore it is technically possible to find a high leveled Ethereal Core that is empty though realistically that wouldn't happen.

Secret Function Learned:

The very first time a person or party enters a dungeon all Ethereal Cores will have a 2x-5x absorption efficiency modifier enchantment attached to them. Normally this only applies to the first one or two floors since no more get cleared the very first time, but if you get strong enough and find a remote, undisturbed dungeon you could gain a fortune.'

"Everyone's questions answered?" I asked.

Nods and agreements followed.

"That means the cores will be worth about half what we got last time, though I'm not sure if it will round up or down for the odd numbers. There's enough cores for each of us to get 10 so, how are splitting this up?" I said.

In the end end Jenna took the Lvl 4, 4 of the Lvl 1s, and the 5 Lvl 0s gaining 43 Ethereal, Ren and I both took one of the LVL 3s and 9 LVL 1 cores gaining 33 Ethereal a piece. Ren and Isabell split the rest with Ren taking 4 Lvl 2 and 6 Lvl 1 cores gaining 40 Ethereal as the System evidently rounded to 7 and not 8 for the Lvl 2s. This left Isabell with a gain of 35 Ethereal from 3 Lvl 2 cores and 7 Lvl 1 cores.

"Alright so let's do our Dungeon Run Review now that we're done with that. I want to see what everyone got!"
