"I see," Drevolan acknowledged. "Thank you."

I wondered if Drevolan truly understood, though he likely did, given his knowledge of the language. "Could you tell me more?" I asked.

"The two relics were, or will be, fashioned together—"

"Excuse me, but is there a straightforward explanation for this 'were or will be' business?" I interrupted.

"No."

"I thought as much." I let it go. Any talk of time's peculiarities only reminded me of the Paths of the Dead, a thought I wanted to avoid.

"Some of our people," the Baelis continued, "sought divinity and forged relics to locate and destroy those seated on the Thrones of Judgment. One became something else; it turned into a tool for discovering whatever the holder desired, rooted in the belief that all of life, including desire, is part of—"

"If you will," Drevolan interjected. "The other one?"

"The other was seized by the Gods in an effort to obliterate it."
