25% A Single Crow / Chapter 33: Ranks and Constitutions

章節 33: Ranks and Constitutions

Marcus had been still calmly listening to his master's teachings so far. He had went over the different ranks and touched upon constitutions briefly.

Essentially, Marcus learned about the first four basic rankings all mages, beasts, and martial artists adhered to. Firstly, was the novice rank which possessed anywhere between 40 and 80 stat points. Secondly, was the elementary rank that possessed anywhere between 81 and 160 stat points. Thirdly, was the intermediate rank that possessed anywhere between 160 and 320 stat points, and finally was the advanced rank which possessed 321 to 640 stat points. These were all of the first four foundational ranks the people of terra went by.

The ranks after this, in ascending order, were rankers, saints, imperiums, and demi-gods. These ranks didn't adhere to restrictions like stat points to ascend. Instead, such ranks were achieved based on a plethora of factors such as understanding of one's class and elemental affinity, the ability to manifest domains, and many other elements Marcus was not yet aware of.

Also, beast followed the exact same system except instead of being called saints, they were referred to as devils, and imperium's were known as ascendants. Other than this, everything else remained uniform with their humanoid counterpart's system.

Along with knowledge of ranks, Marcus was also privy to information on constitutions. He learned that they were unique to a select few individuals and as such were very extremely valuable. They provided their users with unique skills and paths to venture down as they ascended in rank. Said paths could include unique classes, different mana utilization techniques and mage arts, enhanced stat growth, and many other facets to help in an individual's path to ascension.

This was all his master touched upon for now, in regards to Terra's ranking system and constitutions, since he figured Marcus would learn more as he attended the academy, so he went on to discuss with Marcus what exactly he'd be teaching him.

"Now that you've been given a brief run down on Terra, I will teach you about the two types of mages that everyone first start off as," Nekros spoke in an advisory tone. "The first mage path the majority start off as is known as the conjurer. Conjurers mainly focus on ranged combat and possess moderately trained bodies, to act as conduits for mana, that are just strong enough to pull mana from within the surroundings to store within their body and release in the form of whatever element they so choose.

"These mages are among the majority due to its ease of use and it being the most already-explored upon path. Most mages you encounter will be conjurers and as such have a firm foundation to rely upon up until they become a ranker."

"What about the other type of mage?"

"The other type of mage, which will be the one you will be choosing, is the battle mage. Battle mages excel in close combat by enhancing their body with mana and usually stick to frontal engagements. They possess strong-trained bodies that can circulate mana through their bloodstream to allow their body to complete super human feats and at the same time are able to do most things a conjurer can."

Marcus took note of this. Even without his master telling him, he drew the conclusion that battle mages were few and far between due to how difficult it must be to become one. After all, nothing in the world was free; if battle mages could use so much power, there would obviously be a steeper learning curve to it compared to conjurers. Though this also promised better results than a conjurer, Marcus would just have to wait and see if the hypothesis he drew was correct.

"As you can already probably guess from what I've said, battle mages possess far more potential than conjurers. However, this also comes with its own set of obstacles. Those being, unlike a conjurer who embarks upon an already explored path, battle mages must find their own. Most mages of this archetype were killed off long ago during the old war and as such, few remained to pass on their teachings, and the few that did remain still found it hard to pass on such teachings due to the complexity of the field," Nekros stated.

"Not to mention the time, effort, and funds it would take to train a battle mage were astronomical compared to training a conjurer. This is also why once you enter the academy you will likely only meet a handful of said battle mages, and these mages will more than likely be amongst the six noble families of Uceris."

Marcus took a moment to digest the information his master had just spoken. It seemed the battle mage would be the path he'd have to choose if he wished to attain the most power. Though it would be difficult, Marcus was already getting used to things being harder than normal for him so he'd just chalk it up to life throwing another curve ball at him.

"Alright, now that I have a general understanding of the path I'll be walking down, I assume you plan to explain to me what my training will entail now."

"Yes, so far the meditation you've been practicing should have helped to control your unruly emotions, and this should now allow you to practice more hands-on techniques that will prove useful to you."

It was true about the daily meditations Marcus underwent. The meditation technique Nekros had taught him acted as a way to not only control his emotions but lay down the frame work so that he'd be better prepared to control both the mana within his body and outside to excel as a proper battle mage.

"I will be teaching you a total of three mage arts. The first will be [light eater] which is an ability unique to only you that will help in countering those who wield the light element," Nekros stated in a slightly more colder tone than usual.

"The second will be an ability known as [terrify] which will allow for you to have a potent crowd control ability both inside and outside of combat.

"The third and final mage art I'll be teaching you will be [spectral scythe] which is an ability your father was capable of using during the old war."

Marcus's ears perked up after hearing the mention of his father's name. He had asked Nekros about information relating to his family's whereabouts before, but it seemed even Nekros couldn't determine this.

The only thing he could tell Marcus was that they had not yet died because if they had, Nekros would be the first to know.
