I don't know what made Valentino think it was a good idea to sell off his son to his enemy. The marriage pact is signed in blood as well; there is no escaping it. 

The pact was meant to tie Christian down in marriage, but he was in love with Sasha. The two of them chose to get married in secret, all blame be damned. Valentino was oh-so-gracious that he decided to give my brother a second chance, demanding he divorce Sasha and marry Charlotte.
