"Ghosts?" Eve raised an eyebrow.
"Yes." The child looked at the eye. "Everyone here knows I can see one. They wanted me to leave the church, but the Reverend did not agree. How could they throw a child away after a beast tide?"
Eve nodded. Her gaze once again landed on the eye.
"Did you die from the beast tide as well?"
"No..."
"Did you die in the church?" The boy gave her a suspicious look. "Are you one of them?" he asked.
"Them?"
"Hmmm… those people do not speak. So you must not be one of them," the boy mumbled.
"How old are you?" Eve asked.
"I am nine."
"You are too small for a nine-year-old boy."
"Hmmm…" the child nodded. "I am an orphan. I grew up in an orphanage nearby. That is why the Reverend saved us."
Eve nodded. She was surprised at how calm the boy was.
