Kannin wasn't aware of any of this at the time. It would take him another few months to hear the story through the grapevine. At that point he also began hearing of The Copy Ninja and Kakashi of the Sharingan. He knew what that meant, of course, and made many prayers for Obito and for Kakashi. He also sent a letter to Minato offering his condolences.
Almost three years had past since the start of the war, and Kannin looked quite different. He had grown nearly a head taller than he was when he graduated the academy, standing at 5'11". His face had grown a little colder, tear troughs had begun to form beneath his eyes. The shaggy, grey-white hair adorning his head was still restrained by his happuri forehead protector, but it had grown long, about to his mid-back.
His style hadn't changed much, on a typical day he wore deep blue body armor over a black combat suit, covered by a flapping light grey cloak, which bore the swirling symbol of the Uzumaki clan on its back, with Koseki sheathed at his hip.
Walking around with Kiyo at his side, reminiscing over his earlier years when the war wasn't consuming him, he had the terrible feeling that he was going to be tested soon. His powers had grown significantly over this time, his skill with Wind Release in particular had sharpened to a degree he hadn't expected. Koseki had seen a lot of action as well, and his skill with it was honed as far as it could be without more formal training.
While he hadn't been able to hang out as much with his old teammates due to the fighting, they kept up as much as they could, and Kannin could tell how much they had grown as well.
Warai was taller again, but it seemed like she capped out around Kannin's height. Her slick black hair had first grown quite long, but she recently cut it to about shoulder length; she usually wore typical shinobi attire, combat suit beneath a flak-jacket, but she had modified her jacket to hold more shuriken and kunai it seemed.
Tetsu was getting massive, standing around 6'1" and muscular, as opposed to Kannin's more lean look, and wore a combat suit, torn at the forearms and thighs, beneath a tan shirt and white shorts. He had kept his hair shorter, and had begin wearing his forehead protector around his neck.
Even Shin had grown. She had grown accustomed to her one-armed state, and could reproduce many of her jutsus with single-hand seals now, though part of Kannin wanted her to get some advanced prosthesis for it, since he knew firsthand that puppetry had come quite far.
After their morning briefing, they all waved goodbye and went to their tents. Warai's brigade was placed on the far left, with Kannin to her right and Tetsu on his. They all returned to their camps with the uneasy sense that something big was coming.

Feeling the wind blowing the canvas walls of his little tent, Kannin sat reading a scroll with a new jutsu: The Body Flicker. He never officially learned it way back when--he got by with wind chakra enhanced movement--and he realized that it would be a useful tool if he ever fought against A. He wasn't as fast as A, but the flicker might buy him some time. If only they'd let him learn Flying Thunder God...
The basics of the jutsu were simple enough, you imbue your body with chakra so that you can move at speeds faster than most can see. He spent his time before lunch testing it out, and figured that adding lightning or wind chakra to this technique would make him quite formidable. While his fine tuning with it was pretty poor, if the need came, he could use it, just with a higher chakra cost than he'd like.
While he rested to eat lunch, a runner came in, exasperated, and quickly said,
"Kannin, there's a problem at the front!"
Kannin lifted his eyebrow, and asked, "A problem?"
Catching his breath, the runner coughed out, "A shinobi...He's decimating the lines. We can't do anything!"
Kannin's face lowered; there were only so many Kumo-nin who could press all of his men like the way the messenger implied. Dreading the fight he was throwing himself into, he called Kiyo and hooked Koseki to his side, and asked the runner where the problem was. The messenger shinobi pointed directly ahead to the line.
Steeling his resolve, Kannin rushed to his first serious battle in a while.

As he approached the disturbance, he saw Konoha-nin flying around, and heard explosions going off in the distance.
'This can't be good,' He thought, 'Let's bet on my luck, huh? My money's on that it's A.'
Rushing through the ruined forest, many of the tree stumps still smoldering from the last battle, he came to clearing in the brush created by the number of destructive jutsus being used. Looking around, he saw multiple craters and smoldering clods of earth, upturned by a recent battle. Catching sight of the issue, he saw a tall, dark-skinned man assaulting a Konoha-nin on the other side of the clearing.
Kannin rushed over, and just as the enemy's sword was going to pierce Kannin's subordinate, his body vanished, as Kannin flickered him into one of the still-standing trees. Leaning over his soldier, it seemed like whatever injuries she suffered were fairly minor up to that point; she would make it. Kannin looked back on the clearing, and couldn't say the same for many of the bodies lying there.
Leaping down from the tree to face his enemy, Kannin looked at his opponent. What awaited him was a tall, dark-skinned man with blonde-white hair with a white Kumo-forehead protector. He wore fairly typical Kumo attire, aside from the small sunglasses that adorned his face, and the multiple swords on his back.
'Looks like I was wrong,' Kannin thought, somewhat hopeful, somewhat nervous, 'Killer B is my opponent.'
