Kannin, though still in the early morning darkness, was able to see Tetsu finishing off his part of the vanguard. He used earth release to suddenly sink the ground by about 5 meters. His enemies fell abruptly, and Kannin finally saw his punches. They were ibued with chakra, so every strike sent a phantom punch another 20 feet in front of him. After trapping his enemies his punching reached a speed Kannin doubted even Warai could follow, raining a storm of chakra punches on his helpless enemies.
Kannin then looked over towards Warai, and he saw a bomb go off. Not really, but Warai released a fire jutsu so large is mimicked the sun to Kannin's eyes. He also saw dozens of shuriken and kunai erupt form the explosion, all with explosive tags attached, and each one detonated, blowing up anything that wasn't already on fire.
'The crazy kid invented a cluster bomb' Kannin thought with exasperation.
Shin was also dumbstruck by her kids' performances. She had caught the tail end of Kannin's technique, and saw the aftermath, but she saw in full view Tetsu and Warai's techniques. She could have never expected such power from them. She knew Kannin had lots of chakra and could unleash huge jutsus, but even Warai and Tetsu, with comparatively less chakra managed, in their own ways, to release large techniques that eliminated their enemies. Kannin went over to get Tetsu, and Shin ran over to Warai, Kiyo joined Kannin again.
The area was laid to waste by their techniques. Trees were flattened and stripped, the earth was turned upside down, and now much of their surroundings were set aflame after Warai's explosion. Kannin weakly used some water release to put the trees out, but after that, he was pretty drained. He rode Kiyo back to headquarters.
It turns out Kannin had opened a number of his old wounds in that fight, and the medical-nin advised at least 3 days of rest before even thinking of returning to the line. But he did learn while he was being treated that their gamble paid off. Shin got the news of the vanguard returning and ordered a retreat, which was afforded by Team 4's combined efforts.
A number of their old academy classmates visited them in the medical tents to thank them, and congratulate their abilities. They were informed that some had started calling them "The Heroes of Madoromi Pass" by those who were close enough to the fight against the vanguard and had felt the tremors created in the process. They called it that because apparently a number of the Konoha-nin were still asleep for the battle since it was so early in the morning, and that it was only when the shaking and booming of their battle sounded that they woke up. The three of them had a good laugh at that.
Team 4, excluding Shin, spent the next three days recuperating in a medical tent, trading stories of their training and asking each other what their techniques back there were. Tetsu explained that he called his technique 'The Beating Blender,' a name which Kannin and Warai found hilarious. It required him to trap his enemies in an enclosed space before berating them with a high velocity and high frequency barrage of punches. Warai called her 'Fire Release: Cluster Bomb' which seemed pretty reasonable to Tetsu and Kannin. It involved a large fire release jutsu centered on a bunch of projectiles, each with their own explosive tags; ideally, the projectiles would embed themselves into whatever survived the first impact and destroy them.
Eventually Kannin explained his technique, 'Storm God Style: Cloudburst' to them.
"The name seems a little arrogant." Warai said with a grin
It sounded simple enough, they both managed to at least catch a glimpse of the technique. A mixture of water, wind, and lightning applied to a chakra enhanced--overloaded, rather--kenjutsu slash. What they didn't understand was its aftereffects, the smaller whirlwinds.
"It's just a matter of manipulating the wind to mix everything together correctly. Once you do, it sustains a smaller version of a tempest for a few moments: long enough to catch most of the stragglers." He said
"Okay but did I or did I not see a bunch of chains come out of your chest towards the end? Did you really master that Uzumaki technique from our first mission?" Tetsu asked
"I wouldn't say I mastered it," Kannin answered with a chuckle, "that was the first time I used it in battle. I think it went over pretty well all things considered."
"I'll say"
Just then, a familiar voice interrupted their talk, "How's the healing coming?"
They all looked over to see Shin standing in the doorway.
"I just got done planning things until our reinforcements get here."
"We're getting reinforcements?" Kannin asked
"Yeah, it seems like Hokage managed to get two of the Sannin back to Konoha. They're getting sent to the fronts along with 3,000 support shinobi."
Warai cried out, "3000? That'll barely make us equal to Iwa now. What happens when their reinforcements arrive?"
"Yeah," Tetsu added, "We'll still be outnumbered."
"You shouldn't underestimate the effects the Sannin have on Konoha-nin. We go for quality, not quantity." Shin tried to convince them, but even they knew she wasn't so confident.
"Which one are we getting?" Kannin asked
"What do you mean?"
"You said Hokage got two of the Sannin. There are two fronts to this war. It only makes sense to send one to each front. So which one are we getting?"
Shin paused before saying, "We're getting Jiraiya. He should be arriving in less than a week's time. Until he comes with reinforcements, we're on our own against Iwa. You three should rest up. As of the first day's shenanigans, you're some of the strongest shinobi we have. A lot more responsibility will rest on your shoulders."

A while later, still in the medical tent, our three shinobi were lying silently in their beds, staring at the canvas ceiling or watching the flies buzz around. Kannin was replaying the fight in his head, ruminating on the Cloudburst, which, he had come to realize, was perhaps too dangerous to perform until he was older. It simply consumed too much chakra and took too long to execute. There were other jutsu which had similar potency for less cost and had better control. He was thankfully in the air when it went off, but were he any closer, he would have been swept up in the collateral. All in all, it was probably an A rank jutsu.
As he was replaying the use of his chains to himself, Kannin suddenly heard the silence broken by the sound of Tetsu's voice
"Y'know, Kannin," his voice sounded, somewhat tired and shaky
"Yeah?"
"I've been wondering something for a while now" Tetsu continued, turning over to face his friend in the opposing bed, "from when you fought the Iwa army."
"What about it?" Kannin asked, unsure of where he was going with this.
"Well," Tetsu stated, "couldn't you have gone with Kiyo?"
Kannin chuckled a bit hearing Tetsu ask, as it didn't make sense at first, but after a moment, his face began to sour.
"I'm just saying that you could've gone with Kiyo back to Konoha instead of staying to fight the Iwagakure army, right?" Tetsu continued, seeing Kannin's reaction, "I don't have my own summons but that should've been possible, yeah?"
Kannin heard Tetsu's question with greater discomfort this time. Now that he thought about it, he absolutely could've gone with Kiyo to Konoha rather than risk his life, he totally could have escaped; but he didn't. Why?
'It seemed so necessary at the time,' he thought while Tetsu kept elaborating in the background, 'it seemed like the only option...'
"I guess," Kannin finally responded, "I guess I just did. It seemed like the only thing to do. I made a mistake, it happens."
Tetsu scoffed a little at the response, and responded, "Or maybe you have a bigger ego than you think," leaving Kannin in something of a stupor before he finally went to sleep.
