Dinner was amazing, it was hands down the best date they had had in Maya's opinion, but a dark cloud hovered over her as she smiled and ate her dessert across from Nathaniel.
"Is something wrong?" a look of worry crossed Nathaniel's eyes as he looked up at Maya.
"Just a lot on my mind, work and all," she answered.
Maya felt her heart clench at the lie she had just told Nathaniel. They had sworn to stop the lies, and yet here she was again telling him she was tired when in truth she was anxious.
"Maya, you do know you could always take a break," Nathaniel told her. "You've been so distracted tonight it makes me want to send Clark over to help—"
"No," Maya said, an octave higher than normal in her panic. She cleared her throat and shook her head. "I mean, no. I can handle it. You know how important this is to me."
