I'm not sure how long I sat there staring at the door, trying to get everything clear in my head. But it wasn't long. Because my phone rang, and as soon as I saw Kendra's name on the caller ID, I panicked and silenced the ringer.
Shit.
She was going to be furious with me. I hoped they'd arrived at the restaurant soon enough after I left that the table was still there.
I almost slipped the phone back into my purse, but then I realized she'd be worried—I was usually very reliable—so I sent off a hasty text.
SORRY I LEFT. VERY SICK.
HAD TO RUN TO A BATHROOM
THEN GET OUT BECAUSE I
WAS MESSY. I'M WAITING TO
SEE A DOCTOR.
Her reply came back quickly.
HOLY SHIT ARE YOU OKAY?
I hated lying to her, but what else could I say?
