"Zara… Zara!" Ash called after me, but I had already run, tearing out of the room, through his alcove, and then to the door into the hallway, desperate to catch David and explain.

I couldn't let him walk away thinking that Ash's words were true! Not that way.

But when I stepped out of the door, David was already halfway down the hall, but turned around to talk to a handful of guards, his face pale and haggard.

He raked his hand through his hair, then caught sight of me over the shoulder of the man he was talking to.

For a second our eyes met and my heart began to rise.

There was the flash of love and heat that always entered his gaze when he saw me. But it was almost immediately flattened. Rolled over and destroyed by a storm that clouded his eyes and threatened hellfire.

Even on me?

I wanted to call to him, to beg him to come back, and who cared about if the guards saw, or the servants heard?
