I woke suddenly, uncertain what had sucked me out of sleep, until I felt the stroke of a hand on my hair.

I thought it must be Abigail waking me gently, but when I sat up, rubbing my eyes, it was David's smiling face leaning over the bed.

"David! What—"

He shushed me quickly, still smiling, but looking back towards the door into the room that was ajar—which meant if anyone came into my chambers they'd hear us.

"I had a servant intercept Abigail. She'll be here in a few minutes with the dresses she requested from Kaitleen," he said with a sly smile. "Choose the ivory one… please?"

I nodded, still blinking and trying to get my bearings. "What happened? What's taken so long?"
