"Hmm..."
As Zane was peeping through the keyhole, the four were busy chatting at the back.
"Sister, what does a rogue Seeker mean?" Ouida was curious as they didn't learn anything about them in the academy.
Cadell and Valentina also perked up their ears.
"Haah.. They won't teach you this when you're only cadets. You guys know that we become Seekers once we consume the gifts given by our Gods right?" She began explaining as they all listened carefully, nodding their heads.
"This is the orthodox method of becoming a Seeker. In fact, there is another way of becoming a Seeker."
The three tilted their heads in confusion.
Shaking her head, she continued, "The second method is, consuming a heart core of a beast."
They widened their eyes. "Don't we have lots of Mutant Beast's cores in the Academy?" Valentina stated.
Edana shook her head once more. "No, you'd need a heart core of at least a Evolved beast to go through the transformation. A Mutant Beast's core can only be used as a supplement or a ingredient for pills and potions at best."
"Oh.." The three nodded their heads. "So we can be a Seeker if we have a Evolved Beast's core?" Valentina asked again.
"Don't even think about it!" Edana refuted her. "This method is forbidden by the Acrosanctus Church Union. Becoming a Seeker through this method puts an instant target on your back!"
"Is that why you were so hostile towards Brother Zane back then?" Cadell looked at Edana.
Edana turned to him and answered, "Yes, it is a Knight's duty to apprehend any rogue Seekers."
"But why? Why does becoming a rogue Seeker make you a target?" Cadell wanted to know more.
Edana opened her mouth but the answer came from behind her.
"Because becoming a Seeker, or a Godseeker, without the gift of Gods is Blasphemous. It's seen as a challenge to the Gods. The meaning of Godseeking is seeking gifts from Gods after all, so how can rogue Seekers be real Seekers? Isn't that right, Ms. Knight?" Zane stopped behind Edana.
She turned back and nodded her head, "Exactly."
"I tried to see what's behind the door but you can only see so much through a keyhole." Zane changed the topic.
"I only found out that the area behind the door is clear and it looked like another corridor with two paths at the end." He added.
"If it's clear then let us proceed. We've delayed long enough." Edana decided for everyone.
"Okay." Everyone agreed and moved towards the door. Zane turned the door knob but he couldn't open it.
"Here." Cadell handed over a key to him.
Zane stared at the key first and turned his gaze at him.
"I picked it up from the corpse." Cadell blurted out nervously. Zane only nodded and inserted the key in the keyhole.
*Click*
He turned the door-knob which opened this time. He slowly opened the door while everyone readied their weapons behind him.
"Clear." He spoke after confirming there really was no one there. He entered the corridor and scanned the area while everyone followed behind him.
Reaching the end of the corridor, Zane turned his head towards the right and left.
"Where should we go now? There's a door on the left and a spiral stairs leading down towards the right." He asked the group for their opinion.
"Let's go to the left!" Valentina answered right away without thinking.
"What? Let's think abou-" Edana started speaking but Zane interjected her.
"Okay." He started walking towards the left.
"W-Wait. How can you make decisions like this?" She followed Zane, complaining, but he ignored her and reached the door.
"Huh, locked." He went back a few steps and began charging at the door.
*Crack*
He kicked the knob, breaking it. "Let's go." He looked at Edana, who was standing with her mouth wide open.
"It's clear too." Zane entered the room after taking a peek inside. "Seems to be a storage room."
It was a small room with lots of shelves. The shelves had many types of items on it. Weapons, hourglasses, pill bottles. Zane recognized some of the items. It was the Mayhem Bells, the relic he used to kill the cult leader from before.
"Wow.. so many relics." The others were also looking at the items on the shelves.
"What's that?" Edana pointed at the end of the room. It was a wooden display pedestal with a glass box on top.
Everyone walked towards the pedestal and stopped in front of it. "There's a box inside." Valentina commented.
Inside the glass box, there was another rectangular wooden box resting on top of a small white pillow.
"Must be important if they kept it like this." Cadell remarked.
The moment Zane saw the wooden box, his blood began boiling, literally. He felt his hot blood, but not from his body. It was resonating with him from inside his shadowgut bag.
"Huh... Interesting." He reached inside his bag and pulled out the book. It's eye was wide open and staring at Zane.
'Does he want me to open him?' Zane had already began addressing the diary like a human, as he felt it had a strong personality and often conversed with it during his stay at the lab.
"What's that?" Valentina's eyes sparkled. Everyone's focus shifted from the box to the book.
"A relic..." Edana added.
Valentina jumped towards Zane to get a closer look but he stopped her with his hand on her head.
"Sorry Val, you can't see this. Can you guys give me some space?" he shooed everyone away before opening the book.
[Find the traces of ■■■■■]
The first line of the book was the same as before, but new lines were added below.
[Owner! You found it! This is what I was referring to. Oh, also, I could only write that line due to some circumstances~ You have to take this with you! It's very important.]
"What is it?" Zane spoke aloud, turning the attention to him, but everyone was puzzled as it seemed like he was talking to the book.
[Just something important for you hehe~ Take it with you and get out of here! You can take your revenge later!] The book's eye was peering straight at the door.
That was the last line on the book. "Ugh... Fine, you better explain it to me after getting out of here." Zane was about to close the book, but something strange happened.
For the first time, Zane saw writings scribbling on the book before his own eyes.
[Quick! Ready yourselves! Someone's coming through the door!] Just as he finished reading, the door creaked open.
"Huh? The door's lock is busted!" The person behind the door exclaimed and raised his head, seeing everyone inside.
"I-Intruders!" He turned and started running. Everyone was startled as it all happened so suddenly.
Zane quickly reached inside his pocket and threw the stone with force towards the running cultist.
*Bang*
The stone slammed the cultist on his head and he fell down, foaming from his mouth.
"Hello" The stone greeted the unconscious cultist while it fell down from the air.
"Phew.." Zane released a sigh of relief. "Ms. Knight, please bring him inside here. Cadell, you stand guard at the door."
They both nodded. Cadell stood beside the door while Edana dragged in the unconscious man inside.
"What should we do now? Maybe we should take him back and interrogate him, we can come back with more knights later..." Edana suggested. Valentina and Ouida nodded.
"No, let's wake him up first and understand the situation below." He looked at Edana. "The knights from the Sacred Order are trained in basic <Arcane> right? What can you use?"
"Yes.. I can use the "Night Flame Vision", "Night Flame Ball" and the more complex "Night Flame Wave"." She counted on her fingers.
"Ah.. The Sacred Order has a great naming scheme..." Zane grinned at her.
"Are you being sarcastic?" Edana furrowed her eyebrows.
"Oh! No, no of course not! Ah, can you show me the "Night Flame Ball"?" He quickly replied.
Edana's gaze lingered at him for a second before she raised her hand. The darkness around her hand twitched and a blue flame formed on her hand. "There."
"How long can you hold it for?" Zane watched the flame closely and then he started turning his head, checking the surrounding.
"If I don't hurl it, maybe 2-3 minutes." She replied.
"That's good." He was still turning his head, now towards the ground.
"Uh, what are you doing brother?" Ouida asked Zane, unable to contain her curiosity.
"What do you mean?" He looked at her, tilting his head.
"You're not looking at the flame, you're just looking here and there. If you're searching for something, We can help you!" She gave him a smile like an angel.
Zane widened his eyes. 'Cute!'
"Oh there's no need, I'm just checking the effects of the flame on the surrounding." He patted Ouida on her head and gave her a bright smile. "Thank you though."
Ouida was still confused but she didn't press it further. "Alright..."
Zane turned towards the cultist and took out a long rope from his bag.
Edana opened her mouth in disgust, "How much rope do you have in there?"
"A lot, they're really useful for any situation after all!" He replied while tying up the cultist.
"Now, let's wake this bastard up!"
