While he was unhappy, the kid that walked towards him was the opposite.
This one didn't look like a bug catcher, as he never had one, and wore light grey, baggy pants with a black shirt.
"Ah, you must be a trainer," He said, sounding hopeful, "and I know one can't run away from a trainer battle!"
Bob let out a sigh and nodded.
The kid let out his first pokémon.
"Hoothoot!" It hooted, standing triumphantly.
This was not something Bob wanted to do, he just wanted to sleep. But at the back of his head, he needed to train his pokémon, so this was a good time.
"Pidgey!" Dio called out with a smug grin on his face.
Once Hoothoot stared at Dio, its demeanour changed and it began to tremble.
Bob noticed this as well, 'Weird, perhaps this will help it learn,'
"Dio, Quick Attack," Bob ordered, and the flying type disappeared from Hoothoot's view.
It stood still as Dio reappeared.
Dio only felt as if it was an easy win, and smacked into his enemy.
"Damn," The kid said, "Hoothoot, Tackle him back!"
When Bob saw this, the Hoothoot, tried to dash forward, but it failed.
"Use Tackle,"
Instead, Dio flew back, waving sand in the flying type's face.
'Okay, maybe I should have a talk with Dio after this,' Bob thought, frowning.
The sand threw Hoothoot's vision off course. It waved its wings with urgency.
"Dio, Tackle,"
Repeating the order, Dio finally flew forward, colliding with a dazed pokémon.
After Hoothoot rose again, it fell back down. It was already too weak to fight any longer.
"Hoothoot!" The kid shouted, running to his pokémon and picking it up, seeing an unconscious face, "damn, I lost,"
"Another win for you, Dio," Bob said, squatting down, "However,"
"I don't mind that you are deciding the moves rather than listening to my orders," He spoke, patting Dio's head, "but if you want to keep this streak going, you better start obeying me,"
"Pidgey," Dio was irritated by this but understood nonetheless.
As Bob returned Dio, the kid walked up to him.
"Thanks for the battle,"
Bob nodded, "I wanted to ask, your Hoothoot was rather reluctant to fight, how come?"
At this question, the boy sighed.
"I have a friend that I help train with Hoothoot," He began to explain, "However, some time ago, my friend's Rattata used the move Hyper Fang, and now I think Hoothoot is frightened of it,"
If this was the game, this sounded like a side quest, but Bob didn't mind.
"Interesting,"
"Now that I think about it, I may not be able to help him anymore with my pokémon terrified of it," The kid spoke, "but since I am meeting him later, are you interested in battling him?"
'I can't turn down a battle, and I can use Guts for this,' Bob thought before speaking, "Yeah, sure, where are we headed?"
"Follow me," The boy said, "what's your name?"
"Bob,"
"I'm Johan, nice to meet you,"
Some small talk was engaged as the two walked to the supposed spot.
When they reached it, they were in an alley. So they waited.
"He should be here by now," Johan said, leaning against a wall, "this is our training spot,"
"Is there a reason why he trains so much?"
Johan breathed in, hands in pockets, "Carl wants to register for the Johto League, so he trains every day,"
Bob's eyes widened. He never knew that you could register.
"Where can you register?" Bob asked, rather embarrassed.
"At the Pokécenter," Johan replied, "I'm surprised you're not in,"
"Now, I am," Bob said.
Just then, the two noticed another kid walking towards them.
This one had red pants and a dark red sweater on. His face had a high level of confidence.
"Eeeyyyy, Johan!" The kid called out, Johan waved back, "Ready for our training session?"
"Hoothoot is exhausted after a battle with my new friend here," He said, pointing at Bob, who waved, "he will fight you today,"
Carl chuckled, "Okay, let's begin then,"
Bob agreed.
The two made some space between them and faced each other.
"Go, Rattata!" Carl shouted, throwing a pokéball.
"Rattata!" It cried, looking eager to fight.
'Now it's my turn,' Bob thought, pulling back his arm, 'let's make a comeback, Guts,'
"Cyndaquil!" Guts cried out, staring menacingly at the Rattata.
However, the normal type's glare surprised Guts for a moment, as for the first time, he was somewhat intimidated.
'This will be a good experience for Guts,' Bob thought,
"Ember, now,"
The passion Guts felt went with the built up in his mouth, and the fire blast was released.
"Hyper Fang! Double time!"
Carl did not need to tell Rattata about dodging, as even though it was hit, it dashed past the spewing flame, and reached Guts.
He could have aimed where the normal type was going, but Guts felt something dreadful as his enemy honed in.
There was no time to react.
Bob could've sworn that he heard a bunch of swords unsheathing, but what he did see was a pair of big teeth plunge into Gut's neck.
"Cyn-" The dread now boiled over and cut off his scream. The Rattata fell back, glaring once more, but Guts had a face of fear.
'So that is why Johan's Hoothoot looked so terrified,' Bob thought, watching the shaking fire type, 'wonder what Guts is gonna do,'
"Another strike!" Carl exclaimed, "Hyper Fang is awesome, and will always grip fear into its-"
"Cynda!"
Guts was shaking his head from side to side, even hitting his body.
No matter how silly this looked, it brought out the fear and replaced it with an angry Cyndaquil.
Bob was impressed, "Smokescreen,"
Just like that, a cloud of smoke entered the area.
Rattata looked around in the smoke, tensed up.
Only then, did it notice a charging fire type.
Carl saw it as well, "Use Hyper Fang again!"
Rattata did as it was told, and as Guts tackled the normal type, Rattata retaliated with a sword-sounding Hyper Fang.
The two fell back from the impact.
Rattata looked unhurt, but Guts was back to the terrified state.
'A flinch?' Bob raised a hand to his chin, 'that's Hyper Fang for you,'
"Cynda," Guts attempted to shake his body once more, and felt a bit more fired up than usual.
He had to admit that his foe was powerful.
"Your Cyndaquil is a strong opponent," Carl stated, "but he will get beat by my Hyper Fang,"
Bob nodded and began to hear a sound.
Guts had his back blazing again, but this time, the noise was more relevant.
It was present in most of the fire type's battles, especially the ones where he was struggling.
This was one of those times.
"Cynda!" This cry came in almost a roar, nearly scaring the stern Rattata, as it watched the inferno in front of it.
"Use Hyper Fang to finish this battle,"
Rattata obliged and raced for the victory.
"Ember,"
As if he was a rail gun, Guts winded up his blast, feeling the heat boiling.
Though, he hesitated.
"That flinch just ended this battle!" Carl said, smirking.
As Bob watched the Rattata unsheath its deadly jaws, he knew a fact.
"Hyper Fang may be deadly..."
As the normal type dashed, it went off target and right past its foe.
"...but it doesn't always hit, does it?"
As he spoke this, Guts aimed at his unbalanced enemy and let loose.
Rattata could've turned into a speck of dust, but luckily, the fire type had limited time.
The former was revealed as knocked out.
Johan was on the case.
"Rattata is unable to battle," He looked at Guts, "Cyndaquil wins,"
Bob looked at Carl and saw a shocked face.
"I figured it out," He brought Rattata to its pokéball, "it wasn't a flinch, your Cyndaquil charged the attack, that's amazing,"
"Huh, I guess you're right," Bob said, staring at a happy Cyndaquil, 'guess charging attacks exist,'
"But thank you for the battle," Carl bowed, confusing Bob, "are you perhaps going to sign up for the league?"
Bob nodded, "I will,"
Carl stretched out a hand, "I hope to see you there,"
Bob shook his hand.
"Thanks for helping me," Johan said, "now Hoothoot will be back for tomorrow,"
After their goodbyes, and a fire type returning to his pokéball, Bob left the two alone.
While walking, he could only smile.
'That was Guts' first win,' He thought, 'Perhaps I'll train my pokémon once I get back to the Pokécenter,'
Sorry for the late update.
