Cael saw the deep frown on Astnar's normally stoic features. He saw the sneer on Ginevra's lips, too—but when her eyes met Cael's, there was a calculating gleam in them.
'Are you considering this, dear?' she asked. After the last time a mana maelstrom overcharged their wedding bands, hearing Ginevra's voice in Cael's head brought him comfort. 'I have to admire his guts, but that doesn't mean I want to roll over after one threat. What sort of doormats does he think we are? Tsk. Still, that's your choice.'
'Not Astnar's?' Cael asked with a bit of irony. 'I bet he thinks otherwise…'
'He deludes himself,' Ginevra answered with steel assurance. 'Big men and their big pride. And small, limp dick.'
Despite the severity of their situation, Cael had to bite the inside of his cheek to not let out a chortle of laughter. Considering that there was no open conversation going on, only tense silence, that would've just made him look like an idiot.
I got replies to some of my comment replies today, which were surprising and surprisingly nice.
