章節 30: Let us save the child

The air inside the pediatric intensive care unit was tense. Lin Ye asked the nurse to fix her glasses in order to get a better view of the child's heart.

The mother had yet to name her which was strange so she was simply known as patient X.

Lin Ye's heart beat wildly in her chest as she stared at the young one. The baby was very pretty.

Out of all the things she had wanted to become when growing up, Lin Ye had always wanted to be a mother. She pictured herself holding the hands of two small ones as they watched the setting sun in the horizon.

Her motherly heart suddenly felt a pang of pity for the child for having to go through such an intense surgery and the mother who had no power and had to watch her child suffer through such pain.

Lin Ye looked around, "My name is Lin Ye, I will be the lead surgeon today. I will be assisted by Doctor Feng Shu of Cardiothoracic surgery and the intern Mo Jili. Thank you everyone for coming in today, let us save the child."

Her words were simple. Everyone who had come in to help with the surgery nodded after they heard Lin Ye's statement.

"Scalpel..." Lin Ye raised her hands and the ever so familiar blade was placed in her hands.

The sensation of cutting through the child felt unreal. Lin Ye knew that this was not the time to be tense so the cut she made was beautiful.

Very soon, the child's heart came into view. The little thing was beating so slowly that it felt as if it would stop at any moment.

Mo Jili exclaimed, "She is so brave to hold out with a heart like that..."

Lin Ye felt that his statement was true. Although the heartbeat was irregular, the pump was so strong that Lin Ye had to move her hands away once or twice.

Once the chest had been opened, everything else could be seen clearly and Lin Ye could now close the hole in the heart with ease.

They worked together for a long time. Hours and hours went by. The parents were tense in the waiting room and Doctor Chu, who had already finished his work a long time ago still sat in his office, his hands shaking slightly.

He had promised the parents that Lin Ye was the best of the best and he was certain she would do her best to save their child yet even he could not stop himself from feeling nervous.

After eight hours, the surgery doors finally opened, it was already night time.

A tired Lin Ye sauntered out. She removed her gloves and face mask and threw them in the bin and then looked at herself in the mirror next to her.

Her face looked haggard and her shoulders slightly slumped. Sweat had formed on her brows and her breathing was heavy.

She splashed water on her face and then walked out.

She was surprised to see the mother sitting in the waiting area. She and her husband were holding hands tightly and they looked like they were praying.

Lin Ye walked over and held her hands, "You should not be out here."

The mother looked up, her eyes hopeful, "Doctor...how did it go?"

Lin Ye looked at her. She was about to cry again. The husband also looked at her, "Doctor...how is my daughter...she is okay right?"

Lin Ye looked at them. She mentally praised them for holding on until now, not many people were as strong as they were.

"The surgery was a success."

Those words were like finding an oasis in the desert after a long search or finding light at the end of the tunnel.

The mother broke out in loud sobs.

Lin Ye looked frightened, "She is okay, why are you like this?"

The mother did not answer. She simply stood up in labored movements and wrapped her hands around Lin Ye in a crushing hug, "Thank you...thank you so much...thank you..."

She repeated herself several times. Lin Ye did not know what to do with the sudden hug. She placed her hands on the mother's back and rubbed it gently.

Once everything was done, she went back to her office and was surprised yet again when she saw what was inside when she opened the door.

She looked at her watch, it was close to midnight already.

Her heart shook, "What are you doing here?"
