章節 28: Chapter 28 - Knife Hand Barbarians
Danel and Krimnos returned to their camp after six hours of travel, their minds filled with thoughts of the Land of Adenlia and the plentiful food and resources that awaited them there. As they entered the camp, they were greeted by their fellow barbarians, who eagerly gathered around to hear their story.
Danel and Krimnos told of the vast fields and the strange wooden creatures that worked them, and of the bounty of food that could be had if they were to raid the land. The other barbarians listened with rapt attention, their eyes gleaming with the prospect of a plentiful meal.
But when the two men brought their story to the leader of the Knife Hand Barbarians, Crox, they were met with hesitance.
"Attacking a land managed by a mage?" Crox said, stroking his beard thoughtfully. "That's not something to be taken lightly."
Danel and Krimnos exchanged a worried glance. They knew that Crox was right: mages were powerful beings, capable of defending their lands with spells and enchantments. But the thought of all that food, just waiting to be taken, was too tempting to ignore.
"We could do it," Krimnos said, his voice filled with conviction. "We could take the land and all its riches and make it our own."
Crox sighed heavily. "I understand your desire for food, but we cannot risk the lives of our tribe on a foolish venture. We will leave the Land of Adenlia be, for now at least."
Danel and Krimnos hung their heads, disappointed but knowing that Crox was right. They would have to find another way to feed their tribe, at least for the time being. But even as they walked away, they couldn't help but feel a sense of longing for the Land of Adenlia and all the riches that it held.
Crox thought for a moment, then nodded decisively. "Very well," he said. "We will not attack the Land of Adenlia, but we will send two or three men to keep watch on the place. They will gather information on the land and its defenses so that if the time ever comes to raid it, we will be prepared."
Danel and Krimnos perked up at the mention of a possible future raid. "We'll do it," they said in unison.
Crox nodded. "Good. Choose one more man to accompany you, and set out at once. But be careful—the mage who manages that land is no ordinary man. He may be able to detect your presence, and if he does, you will be in great danger."
Danel, Krimnos, and their chosen companion nodded solemnly, their minds already turning to the task ahead. They would watch the Land of Adenlia, and they would do it well. And who knows, perhaps one day they will be able to claim it for themselves.
Danel and Krimnos were thinking about who to choose with them, and at the same time, they could not help but think that if they do get caught alive, things would not be good for themselves at all. It is not hard to know something like this; mages are vengeful individuals that have a number of ways to make one feel pain differently than others.
