I was nervous.
Felix, after finding me at my parents home managed to convince me to come back. "This marriage will work between us and I will make sure that our prenup is fair for both of us." Sure the prenup thing was eating me alive, but so was his mother.
"What about your mom though. She is making my life hell and you cannot tell me that you don't see what she is doing. If I will get married to you, we need to move out and have our own space. I will not have my married life in that place. Unless she makes real attempts to make me feel welcomed."
Realistically I wanted nothing to do with her, even if she did a 180 and tried to be nicer I would never be comfortable with her. But if I did not include that, Felix would not be willing to help me. He is close to his parents and as much as they may pressure him, he would do whatever he can to please them.
He has only gone against their wishes twice. The first was breaking the engagement to Celeste. The other is marrying me.
"That will be the first thing we need to do when we get back to my place. I want both of us to talk to her and if she is not willing to be on our side, I will move us out." It was a bold statement. One I was not sure I could trust but the deep sincerity in his eyes moved me.
"Ok one last chance."
I went back into my house and explained the situation to my family. They were not very pleased but they knew I was stubborn. I went back and forth with them for a while until finally my mom caved. And when she did my dad had to as well. So they let me go but asked that I return with Felix for a proper introduction.
The conversation between us and his mother was what I was now nervous for. She did not hide her emotions in the confines of her own home.
Felix did as he promised, he laid out his terms and gripes with her behavior and asked for her to be nicer to me. He also asked for lawyers to be present when drafting the prenup to be as fair as possible for each of us.
I thought she would put up more of a fight but she simply sat in silence after. Her eyes were stormy but soon became calm and still. "Fine. I can agree to that. All I ask is that no more stunts like what she pulled today occurs again. I can be cordial but she needs to keep her toes in line."
She never really addressed me during the conversation. It was like I was Felix's property and he needed to control me. I nearly blew up but Felix gave her a pointed look before she turned to face me. "I ask that you Sol, do not do what you did today again. I understand if you felt pressured but what you did has caused some unpleasant issues we are cleaning up. I will try to be fair but you need to keep in line and in check."
It was the best she was offering me and honestly, I needed to take it. I was in no position to find someone better and I love Felix.
"Sure."
Since our conversation we made some progress and finally we sent out our wedding invitations. As much as I did not want to invite Celeste, she and her family were sent an invitation. So was the Cortez family but their son Dean was excluded.
"Oh their son is a troublemaker. He has no class and is a fool. I am surprised he is still inheriting their business empire but I will not have him come to the wedding and make us look like fools. I did agree as he purposefully sent us to the wrong place during his gala.
"Sure but would his parents care if he is invited?" This is what worried me. I knew my parents would care. "Oh no I doubt it. He is independent from them, he lives in his own place and considering the things he has done. If they did, I am sure they would understand."
I hoped she was right but as the weeks passed from when we sent them, the feeling of things going wrong worsened. We got many instant responses back but nothing yet from the D'Angelos or the Cortez family.
"They are busy people, it is not unusual for their responses to come later. They often have to sort through many invitations." Though when she said it, it felt like she was trying to soothe herself.
Finally the day of the deadline we set for RSVPing the event, we got a response from both families. And it was a resounding no.
"We respectfully decline the invitation as we will not be in the country at the time. Best of luck for the marriage." Toni read out loud the D'Angelo response. I read over the Cortez and theirs was more severe. "No we will not attend." They did not bother to even list a reason.
It seemed they did care if their son was snubbed.
"How dare they?! Are we too little for them? They could not even make time for us? Well we shall see about that. Come Sol I will show you how to force the big wigs to kneel." Beofore I knew it Toni grabbed my arm and tugged for me to follow her.
Felix and his father were at work so I had no one to stop her.
She took us to some high society club where a select group of older generation wealthy women were hanging out and eating. And in the center was Mrs. Cortez. "Hello, Estelle how are you?" Her voice was pinched clearly holding back any anger.
"Ahh yes Toni, surprised to see you here." Though I am not fully familiar with how wealthy ladies interacted to me it felt like a duel. And 'Estelle' though she said fewer words, seemed to have the upper hand already. It would not be easy for Toni to make her submit.
