The whole group moved forward but started laughing at realizing she did not toss it. "Awww ok for real this time ready! One, two, three!" She threw the bouquet back and as if divinely planned, it arched perfectly into my arms. "Wow."
I felt embarrassed. 'Man I should have just stayed seated.' Even though externally I smiled and shook the flowers from side to side in a 'victory' gesture, inside I just wanted the Earth to swallow me whole.
Cheers and laughter rang loudly in the hall. I glanced over at the table and my mom had her phone out and was smiling brightly. She saw my gaze and gave me a thumbs up. My father was red in the face clearly looking like he wanted to hold back his laughter. Dean had a lopsided grin and was clapping slowly. His eyes bright from happiness and jest.
Rebecca came down and smiled at me before giving me a tight hug. "I am sorry for putting you on the spot. But I won't lie I am so happy you caught it." She whispered in my ear. I hugged her back and also whispered in her ear speaking through gritted teeth. "This better not have been planned."
The photographer came up and snapped a few photos candidly and then had after us pose together in a more structured way. The woman who was aiming to get the flowers was giving me a strong stink eye and was scowling angrily. I almost wanted to give them to her but I felt that it would only make her more upset.
I returned to my seat more flustered but I kept my cool as best as I could. Thankfully those at the table had the tact to not mention it. "Alright lets have the bride and groom come up to play a game of who knows the other best."
The two sat in the middle of the dance floor on a chair not facing one another. Rebecca had one of her heels in her hand while Alan held one of his shoes. The MC proceeded to run though questions asking things such as who is more likely to do certain tasks, who is more picky, who has the best sense of humor, and so on.
It was fun to watch because it gave a small insight on how the couple worked with one another but also in how they view each other. Based on the number of points they were evenly split. Neither side overwhelming the other.
After the groom began his awkward retrieval of the garter from the bride. "This is the one tradition that I wish would die." I spoke out quietly as everyone watched Alan try to be sexy. "Pfft." Dean muffled his laughter from my comment which he was most likely the only one who heard.
"You have something to say?" I narrowed my eyes a bit at him. He was leaning on his chair lazily and was very relaxed. "No princess nothing at all." His eyes alone teased me, I bet for him this kind of thing was nothing.
I simply scoffed but not out of anger or irritation. After Alan got the garter the single men were invited up to see who would catch it. Unlike myself Dean voluntarily stood up and made his way without being sent or told. "Oh!" His mother gasped while his father also scoffed but like me more so in surprise.
Alans cousin also was on the dance floor. He started hyping up the folks seating near the dance floor and was acting like this was some kind of stage. He even started barking like one of those frat boys do at sports games.
His face was red and he was sweating. His glasses which hid his eyes kept slipping off and it was easy to see how bloodshot they were. "It seems he had too much to drink already. Someone should cut the poor kid off." My dad looked displeased at how drunk Greg was. Even as a heavy drinker himself, he knows his limits and stops.
Greg suddenly turned to our table and pointed in our direction. "This is for you." His words were a bit slurred. My eyes snapped to Dean whose jaw was clenched but he thankfully made no move to hurt him again.
We managed to keep his actions from the party tightly wrapped but I would hate for him to dig himself a hole yet again. Dean was showing restraint which I was relieved about, even Rebecca was watching him like a hawk while Alan was oblivious as his back was turned away.
"Ok ready guys, one... two..." Just as the MC yelled three a small child ran from the nearby tables and when Greg lunged for the garter he tripped on the kid and fell flat on his face. The child was scooped up so he was safe from being crushed by Greg. Holding the garter high in the air in one hand while the child in the other was Dean.
"I swear your son needs to join a professional team, his speed and reflexes are unmatched."
Laughter flooded the hall. Dean let the child down so he could run back to his parents. Dean gave a flirty grin as he twirled the garter around his finger. He hummed with joy as the other single guys crowded him and starting hyping and fawning over him.
Like me he also got a mini photo session with Alan as well as getting candid shots. Rebecca waved me over signing that I bring the bouquet as well. "Ok lets take a shot of all four then one of the lovely winners."
The picture of the four of us was normal and when it was just me and Dean we stood side by side. Thankfully Dean did not hold up the garter during our duo shoot and simply held my arm as I held the bouquet. I noticed our parents discussing something with serious faces from the corner of my eye but could not tell what was being said.
After the photos were done, the couple gave a speech thanking everyone who attended as well as hearing the speeches prepared by their parents. The maid of honor gave a short speech but the best man was out for the count due to his fall. Once the well wishes were said and cried over, the time for the real party began. Most of the older generations started to head out back to the hotel at this point while the younger crowd stormed the dance floor.
I started to collect my belongings when I noticed my parents and Deans parents started to head out together. "Honey feel free to stick around a bit longer. The Cortez family offered to let us stay with them at their place for the night. Hang out with your friends, we will meet you when Dean takes you back."
"I am doing what now." Dean had walked over but he had more alcohol with him. His mother clicked her tongue, "Maybe it will be Celeste instead who takes him back."
A wave of deja vu hit me. 'Shit not again!'
